Core Job Summary:
The Specialized Security Services Officer (SSSO) is a highly trained member of the Public Safety team responsible for rapid response to high-risk incidents, including active shooter or armed intruder threats. This position requires advanced tactical readiness, exceptional judgment under pressure, and a commitment to protecting life and ensuring the safety of patients, visitors, staff, and medical personnel across all UHealth facilities.
The SSSO serves as a visible deterrent to potential violence, responds decisively to immediate life-threatening events, and operates as part of a coordinated tactical unit to contain and stabilize critical incidents until law enforcement arrives.
Core Responsibilities:
  • Conducts regular patrols of assigned areas, both on foot and by vehicle, in all weather conditions.
  • Ensures a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, staff, and property.
  • Responds immediately to all emergencies, security and disaster situations.
  • Provides assistance and directions to patients, visitors and employees.
  • Enforces security and safety policies in compliance with system procedures and applicable laws.
  • Maintains accurate, detailed, and timely report submission.
  • Safeguards confidentiality and exercises sound judgement in all interactions.
  • Engages and when necessary, physically controls acts of aggression or violence.
  • Ensures proper use, maintenance, and readiness of all issues security equipment.
  • Maintains effective communication and collaboration with other members of the Public Safety Department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
Department Specific Functions:
  • Control building access, prevent property loss or damage, and enforce university and departmental polices.
  • Respond to building alarms and security system alerts.
  • Monitor and report safety hazards, system failures, and security risks.
  • Use sound judgement to ensure fair and impartial enforcement of polices.
  • Maintain accurate, legible, and timely submission of reports for all incidents and activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the effective operation of the department.
  • Officer may be assigned or reassigned to alternate work locations on a rotating, monthly basis as operational needs require, or at the discretion of the Executive Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
  • Ability to pass a psychological assessment
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent required
Certification and Licensing:
  • Class D Security license from the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services needs state issued license or proof of application within first 30 days of employment.
  • Class G Armed Security license from the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services; needs state issued license or proof of application within first 30 days of employment.
  • Valid Florida driver's license
Experience:
Specialized Security Services Officer 1
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience required (healthcare setting preferred)
Specialized Security Services Officer 2
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience required (healthcare setting preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in the military or high-risk security operations.
Specialized Security Services Officer 3
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience required (healthcare setting preferred)
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in law enforcement, military, or high-risk security operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to write concise detailed reports with proper spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to make rapid, sound decisions under stress.
