What is a high rigger?

High Riggers are skilled professionals who work at significant heights to install, maintain, and dismantle rigging equipment used to lift and move heavy objects. They are commonly employed in industries such as construction, entertainment (for stage rigging), telecommunications, and shipbuilding. High Riggers are trained to ensure safety protocols are followed and often work with cranes, hoists, pulleys, and other complex rigging systems. Their work is vital for safely handling large structures, lighting, sound equipment, and scenery. Due to the risks involved, High Riggers must have specialized training and certification.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a high rigger?

To thrive as a High Rigger, you need a solid understanding of rigging principles, safety regulations, and experience with stage or construction rigging, often supported by certifications like OSHA or ETCP. Familiarity with rigging hardware, load calculation software, and personal protective equipment is essential. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work well at heights and under pressure are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure both personal and team safety while efficiently handling complex rigging setups in demanding environments.

What are some of the key safety challenges high riggers face on the job, and how are they managed on site?

High Riggers often work at significant heights, handling heavy loads and complex rigging setups, which makes safety a top priority. They must be vigilant about fall protection, regularly inspect rigging equipment, and closely follow safety protocols to prevent accidents. Teamwork and clear communication with ground crews and other trades are essential to ensure everyone's safety. Most sites require High Riggers to participate in ongoing safety training and adhere to strict regulatory standards, such as OSHA guidelines, to mitigate risk.
