How much do high performance computing jobs pay per year?
What is high performance computing?
A High Performance Computing (HPC) job involves designing, managing, and optimizing advanced computing systems used for complex calculations, simulations, and data processing. Professionals in this field work with supercomputers, parallel computing frameworks, and high-speed networks to enhance computational efficiency. HPC specialists are commonly employed in scientific research, engineering, finance, and artificial intelligence to solve large-scale problems. Responsibilities often include developing algorithms, maintaining HPC clusters, and improving system performance.
What are the typical responsibilities of someone working in high performance computing?
Professionals in High Performance Computing (HPC) are often responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining powerful computing clusters tailored for processing large data sets or running complex simulations. Daily tasks may include optimizing code and workflows for parallel environments, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and supporting researchers or engineers in using HPC resources efficiently. Collaboration is common, as HPC specialists work closely with IT staff, domain scientists, and software developers to ensure systems meet project and organizational goals. This role provides a challenging and dynamic work environment, offering opportunities to continually learn about emerging technologies and methodologies in computational science.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in high performance computing, and why are they important?
To thrive in High Performance Computing, you need expertise in parallel computing, computer architecture, and programming languages such as C/C++ or Fortran, often backed by a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with HPC cluster management, job scheduling systems (e.g., SLURM), and experience with accelerators like GPUs or cloud platforms is crucial; certifications in Linux administration or HPC technologies are advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities help professionals excel in complex, collaborative environments. These qualifications enable the efficient design, deployment, and maintenance of advanced computing infrastructure to support scientific and engineering applications.

Apply and develop advanced methods and technologies in Machine Learning (ML) and Quantum Information (QI) to enhance TRIUMF's research programs.
Collaborate with research groups to identify opportunities where ML and QI can improve scientific output.
Lead in the development, integration, and optimization of accelerators-based applications using GPUs, FPGAs, and Quantum Computing in a high-performance computing environment.
Job description
Discover TRIUMF, Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.
Our mission is to serve as Canada's particle accelerator centre. We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied. We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences. We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.
TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.
The Machine Learning and Quantum Information Systems Specialist will play a key role in advancing TRIUMF's research programs by applying cutting-edge methods and technologies in Machine Learning (ML) and Quantum Information (QI). To be effective in this position, the incumbent will collaborate closely with research groups to identify opportunities where ML and QI can enhance scientific output, co-supervise students and postdoctoral researchers, and provide guidance in developing and adapting innovative methodologies to achieve research objectives.
The Specialist will also collaborate closely with the Canadian ATLAS Tier-1 Centre team and play a leading role in the software framework development, integration, and optimization of accelerators-based applications for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider challenging computing environment. Development activities are crucial in ensuring that advanced compute accelerator technologies based on GPUs, FPGAs and/or Quantum Computing, are effectively deployed and utilized in a heterogeneous high-performance computing environment.
Beyond project leadership, the incumbent will share expertise through presentations, workshops, and training initiatives, both within TRIUMF and with national and international collaborators. They will also contribute to the next generation of talent by supporting internships, capstone projects, and summer schools.
Finally, the Specialist will help foster strategic partnerships with Canadian academia and industry to further strengthen TRIUMF's ML and QI initiatives and broaden their impact.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Apply and develop advanced methods and technologies in Machine Learning (ML) and Quantum Information (QI) to enhance TRIUMF's research programs.

- Provide guidance in developing and adapting innovative methodologies to achieve research objectives.
- Co-supervise students and postdoctoral researchers engaged in related projects.
- Leading role in R&D activities enabling use of advanced compute accelerators (GPUs, FPGAs, Quantum Computing) at the Canadian ATLAS Tier-1 Centre.
- Share expertise through presentations, workshops, and training opportunities at TRIUMF and with national/international collaborators.
- Contribute to training and mentorship through internships, capstone projects, and summer schools.
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships with industry to expand TRIUMF's ML and QI initiatives and their impact.
- Work on complex issues that require in-depth evaluation of variable factors and make non-routine decisions on project work where a high degree of accuracy and sound judgement are vital, as errors in detail or in decisions could lead to setbacks with research programs.
- Determine selection criteria for methods and techniques used in individual projects and have the ability to present complex ideas to interdisciplinary teams and team leaders anticipating objections and concerns.
- Responsible for objectives with long timelines with impact on several teams and lead cross-functional work that extends beyond their own area of expertise.
- Developing a professional network within the institution, nationally and internationally among academic and business leaders.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
There are no direct supervisory responsibilities associated with the position. However, the incumbent will act as a mentor and provide guidance to TRIUMF's scientific users, staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students at TRIUMF.
