A Herd Manager is responsible for overseeing the health, nutrition, and daily care of livestock, typically on a farm or dairy operation. Their duties include monitoring animal well-being, managing breeding programs, supervising farm staff, and ensuring efficient milk or meat production. They also coordinate veterinary care, maintain facility cleanliness, and track herd performance data. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and animal husbandry skills are essential for success in this role.
A Herd Manager's daily routine often includes monitoring livestock health, overseeing feeding and breeding programs, and ensuring proper record-keeping for each animal. They supervise and coordinate farm staff, manage veterinary visits, maintain herd facilities, and address any issues that arise with animal well-being. Most Herd Managers also spend time planning herd improvements and may collaborate with agricultural consultants or veterinarians to optimize herd performance. The role requires hands-on involvement as well as administrative oversight to keep the operation running smoothly and efficiently.
To thrive as a Herd Manager, you need strong knowledge of animal husbandry, livestock health, nutrition, and farm management, typically backed by experience or a relevant agricultural qualification. Familiarity with herd management software, record-keeping systems, and sometimes certifications like BQA (Beef Quality Assurance) are valuable. Leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for coordinating teams and ensuring animal welfare. These competencies are vital to maintaining herd productivity, preventing health issues, and efficiently running farm operations.
