Help Elementary School Students with Reading or Math

Norfolk County RSVP invites adults age 55+ to support elementary school students by providing one‐on‐one and small‐group assistance in reading or math through our Elementary School Partner Program.

Volunteer tutors work directly with host teachers in K–5 classrooms, helping students who need extra academic support to build skills, confidence, and a love of learning. No prior teaching experience is required—just patience, reliability, and a genuine interest in working with children.

What You'll Do

As an Elementary School Volunteer Tutor, you will:

  • Assist students with reading or math in one‐on‐one or small‐group settings
  • Support classroom teachers during the school day
  • Provide encouragement and positive adult engagement for young learners
  • (In some schools, opportunities may also include art, music, science, or library support)

Participating Schools & Communities

RSVP partners with elementary schools across Norfolk County, which may include:

  • Dedham
  • Needham
  • Norfolk
  • Randolph
  • Sharon
  • Stoughton
  • Walpole
  • Weymouth

RSVP makes every effort to match volunteers with schools based on location preference, availability, and classroom interest.

Time Commitment

  • Minimum of 1 hour per week
  • Commitment runs throughout the school year

Screening & Training

All school volunteers are required to complete:

  • A CORI background check
  • An in‐person interview with RSVP staff
  • Two 2.5‐hour classroom training and orientation sessions prior to placement

Who Should Apply

RSVP welcomes volunteers from all backgrounds—whether you are a retired educator, a former professional, or someone new to classroom volunteering. Your life experience and time can make a lasting impact.

Norfolk County RSVP is part of Senior Corps, a national program committed to strengthening communities through service by adults age 55+.

Sign up today to join our list of elementary school volunteers and receive information about upcoming training and background check sessions before the school year begins.
