Job description

Summary


The Senior Accountant supports the Accounting Manager in the daily execution of full-cycle accounting operations within a government contracting environment. This position performs complex accounting functions, reviews the work of accounting staff, provides day-to-day guidance, and helps ensure transactions are accurate, properly supported, and compliant with established company procedures

Key Responsibilities

  1. Perform and review full-cycle accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, cash activity, and account reconciliations.
  2. Review accounting staff work for accuracy, proper coding, required approvals, and adequate supporting documentation.
  3. Provide day-to-day guidance and technical assistance to accounting staff and help coordinate workload and deadlines.
  4. Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities as assigned by the Accounting Manager.
  5. Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations and research discrepancies.
  6. Review transactions for appropriate contract, project, general ledger, and direct/indirect cost classification.
  7. Review labor distributions and timekeeping records for proper contract/project and indirect charging.
  8. Assist with monitoring indirect cost pools, allocation bases, and indirect rates.
  9. Review customer billings and supporting documentation for accuracy and compliance with contract requirements.
  10. Monitor accounts receivable and unbilled balances and assist with resolving discrepancies.
  11. Review vendor invoices, purchase order documentation, expense reports, and other transactions for proper accounting treatment.
  12. Support vendor compliance documentation, including W-9 and 1099 requirements.
  13. Maintain complete and organized accounting records and audit trails.
  14. Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for DCAA, external, internal, and other audits.
  15. Identify accounting errors, control weaknesses, compliance concerns, or unusual transactions and escalate them to the Accounting Manager.
  16. Assist with ERP/accounting system implementation, process improvements, and staff training.
  17. Work with Contracts, Program Management, Purchasing, Payroll, and other departments to resolve accounting and billing issues.
  18. Perform other accounting duties and special projects as assigned by the Accounting Manager.


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work


This is a full-time hybrid position. Days and hours of work are primarily Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with a one-hour unpaid lunch. The position will require three days in office with two days of remote work after 90 days of employment. Evening and weekend shifts may be required as job duties demand.


TRAVEL


Occasional travel (up to 10%) to DST's Southern Pines, NC site or other company locations as required.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  2. Five plus years' (5+) of progressive accounting experience; government contracting experience strongly preferred.
  3. Strong full-cycle accounting and general ledger experience.
  4. Knowledge of GAAP and familiarity with FAR, CAS, and DCAA requirements.
  5. Experience with government contract billing, direct and indirect costs, labor accounting, and project accounting preferred.
  6. Strong reconciliation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  7. Ability to review work and provide guidance to accounting staff.
  8. Strong Excel and accounting/ERP system skills.
  9. Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Active CPA license or CPA candidacy.
  2. NetSuite or similar ERP experience.
  3. Prior experience within an aerospace, defense, training contracting environment.
  4. Experience supporting a merger, acquisition, or public-company readiness initiative (S-1/registration statement support, first-year SOX implementation, etc.).
  5. Familiarity with DFARS business systems requirements (Accounting, Estimating, MMAS, Purchasing).
  6. Experience preparing for or supporting a Contractor Purchasing System Review (CPSR).

OTHER HIRING REQUIREMENTS

  1. Valid Driver's License.
  2. U.S. Citizenship is requiredto obtain/maintain a United States Security Clearance.
  3. Must pass a DOT/FAA regulated drug screening.
