Helper Electric information

What is a helper electric?

Helper Electric jobs involve assisting electricians with the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. Helpers typically handle tasks such as carrying materials, cleaning work areas, and using basic hand tools under the supervision of a licensed electrician. This entry-level position is ideal for those seeking hands-on experience in the electrical trade and can be a stepping stone to becoming a licensed electrician through further training and apprenticeship programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a helper electric?

To thrive as a Helper Electric, you need basic knowledge of electrical systems, safety protocols, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, electrical meters, and sometimes OSHA safety certification is typically required. Reliability, attention to detail, and strong teamwork skills help you stand out in assisting electricians and ensuring job site efficiency. These competencies are essential for maintaining a safe work environment and supporting the successful completion of electrical projects.

What are some common challenges faced by a helper electric when working on active construction sites?

Helper Electricians often encounter challenges such as adapting to fast-paced, changing work environments and coordinating tasks with multiple trades on-site. Safety is a major focus, as they must consistently follow protocols while handling tools and assisting with wiring installations in sometimes cramped or elevated spaces. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial, as Helper Electricians frequently support journeymen and must be receptive to instructions while also ensuring their own tasks are completed accurately.

What is the difference between Helper Electric vs Electrician Apprentice?

Helper ElectricElectrician Apprentice
Assists electricians with basic tasks, often without formal certificationUndergoing formal training, typically enrolled in an apprenticeship program
Performs tasks like carrying materials, setting up work sites, and basic installationsPerforms more complex electrical work under supervision, gaining skills and certifications
Work environment: construction sites, residential, commercial projectsSimilar work environment, with increased responsibilities and training
Certifications: Usually none required, may have OSHA or basic safety trainingRequires an apprenticeship program, often leading to licensing or certification

Helper Electric roles typically involve assisting electricians with basic tasks and do not require formal certifications. Electrician Apprentices are in training, gaining skills and certifications through structured programs. While both work in similar environments, apprentices perform more advanced tasks as they learn the trade.

Job description

Ready to lead the site, not just work on it?

Bold Electric is growing, and we're looking for an experienced Journeyperson Electrician ready to take the lead on commercial projects.

As our Commercial Site Lead, you'll take ownership of the day-to-day success of your projects—coordinating people and materials, working with clients, managing inspections, monitoring budgets, and ensuring the finished work meets Bold Electric's standards.

You'll also lead and develop the people around you, helping build a job site where people work hard, work safely, and work well together.

What You'll Be Doing

As the on-site leader for commercial electrical projects, you'll:

  • Lead and coordinate day-to-day electrical work on commercial job sites
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, plans, specifications and applicable codes
  • Coordinate materials, scheduling and site logistics with the Commercial Supervisor
  • Assign work and help keep the field team productive and projects moving
  • Mentor and train apprentices and journeypersons
  • Coordinate inspections, including fire alarm and special inspections
  • Communicate with utilities, clients, vendors and other project partners
  • Track labour and material budgets and work with the supervisor to review job costs
  • Troubleshoot issues and find practical solutions when things don't go according to plan
  • Maintain Bold Electric's expectations for quality, workmanship and site organization
  • Lead daily safety practices and ensure company and legislative requirements are followed
  • Identify opportunities to make our projects more efficient and profitable

What We're Looking For

You'll need to be a certified Journeyperson Electrician with the technical knowledge and field experience to confidently lead commercial work. Beyond the ticket, we're looking for someone who:

  • Takes ownership and follows through
  • Can lead a crew without needing to be micromanaged
  • Communicates clearly with clients, coworkers and leadership
  • Knows how to balance quality, schedule and budget
  • Is organized and can keep multiple priorities moving
  • Is comfortable using construction-related apps and digital tools
  • Stays calm and solution-focused when problems come up
  • Takes pride in quality workmanship and a well-run site
  • Enjoys teaching and developing less-experienced electricians
  • Leads by example when it comes to safety, professionalism and work ethic

You'll also need a valid driver's licence with a clean abstract, along with valid First Aid and WHMIS certification.

What Success Looks Like

For us, a strong Site Lead isn't measured only by whether the lights turn on. Success means safe sites, quality work, satisfied clients, strong communication, developing apprentices, projects completed on time, and keeping labour and material costs aligned with the job.

Why Join Bold Electric?

At Bold Electric, we believe great people build great companies.

We invest in our team, encourage growth, and provide opportunities for employees to evolve their careers. You'll work alongside experienced professionals who value accountability, communication, craftsmanship, and teamwork.

What You Can Expect:

  • 4-day work week
  • Competitive hourly rate starting at $42 per hour
  • Group Benefits, $500 per year lifestyle account after 90 days
  • 2 weeks’ vacation a year to start
  • Career development opportunities
  • Leadership growth path
  • Diverse and challenging projects
  • Supportive team culture

Ready to Be Bold?

If you're ready to take your electrical career beyond the tools and into leadership, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply today and help us build something exceptional.
