What is a healthcare project manager?

Healthcare project managers are professionals responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects within the healthcare industry. They coordinate between clinical and administrative teams, manage budgets and timelines, and ensure that projects meet regulatory requirements and organizational goals. Their work helps improve patient care, streamline processes, and implement new technologies or systems in healthcare settings.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a healthcare project manager?

To thrive as a Healthcare Project Manager, you need expertise in project management principles, healthcare operations, and often a degree in healthcare administration or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project or Asana, and certifications such as PMP or Lean Six Sigma, are highly valued. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help manage diverse teams and stakeholders effectively. These competencies ensure that healthcare projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet quality standards critical to patient care and organizational success.

How does a healthcare project manager typically collaborate with clinical and non-clinical teams during a project?

Healthcare Project Managers play a vital role in bridging communication between clinical staff (like doctors and nurses) and non-clinical teams (such as IT, finance, and administration). They facilitate meetings, gather requirements, and ensure all stakeholders are aligned on project goals and timelines. Regularly, they translate clinical needs into actionable project plans and resolve any misunderstandings that arise between diverse groups. This collaborative approach helps ensure project success and smooth implementation of healthcare initiatives.

Entry-level healthcare projects often involve administrative tasks, data entry, or basic patient support roles that require minimal specialized training. Positions such as medical receptionist, health data assistant, or volunteer roles are typically easier to access and may require only a high school diploma or basic certification. Gaining relevant soft skills and understanding healthcare workflows can improve chances of entry into these projects.

  • Anticipate budget and schedule risks and implement mitigation strategies
  • Lead value engineering discussions and review alternative solutions with project teams
  • Coordinate peer reviews and specialty consultants as required for project success
  • Direct and mentor Assistant Project Managers and other project team members
  • Oversee construction activities to ensure compliance with project requirements, quality standards, and design intent
  • Support contract issuance, purchase orders, and progress payment reviews
  • Monitor construction progress and provide reporting on project status, risks, and field conditions
  • Manage project closeout and transition activities through successful completion and occupancy
  • Contribute to business development efforts through networking, proposal development, client presentations, and interview participation
  • Promote the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, and client service
What We're Looking For
  • 8+ years of experience in the real estate design, development, or construction industry
  • Experience serving as an Owner's Representative or Project Manager representing the interests of developers, owners, investors, or institutional clients
