Job Description Summary:
Responsible for assisting medical provider with direct patient care, performs clerical/ environmental duties and organizational compliance task. Responsible for appointment scheduling and chart management. Provides medical care and information to patients so that they may fully utilize and benefit from clinic services. Conveys a positive image of clinic. Employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the clinic.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Fulfills patient care duties to include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/ procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing exam room/ setting up instruments etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings/ lab test per Medical Provider's orders; assisting Medical Provider/ other Licensed nursing staff with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patients/ family; answering telephone calls and providing pertinent information.
  • Assists with clerical duties to include sending and receiving patient medical records; completing patient referrals for diagnostic test or specialist services; completing other forms and requisitions as needed; scheduling appointment / verifying insurance coverage; entering patient demographics; managing charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
  • Administers medications and treatments within scope of practice, prepares for tests and surgery, and assists physicians with procedures and examinations according to policy
  • Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste
  • Identifies, records, and reports any change in patient condition or adverse reaction to treatment and/or medication to the medical provider.
  • Receives and transcribes the physician, FNP, PA orders as appropriate.
  • Documents care in patient record.
  • Fulfills environmental duties to include cleaning exam/procedure room/ instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; sterilize any equipment or instruments according to scheduled maintenance program; keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; restocking exam/ procedure rooms.
  • Orders patient supplies and completes referrals for patients.
  • Fulfills organizational duties to include respecting and promoting patient rights; following all Clinic Policies and Procedures and System wide policies.
  • Responds to medical emergencies, initiates CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the clinic.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
  • Performs preceptor duties to new employees and students to provide needed guidance during orientation.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
  • Must have High School diploma, some college preferred or attended and/ or graduated from training to become a Medical Office Assistant.

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:
  • MOA certification required.
  • Attain CPR certification during the introductory period and maintain certification during employment.
  • Effective 2023, MOA's entering orders in the outpatient clinic are required to be Certified MOA's, despite location.
  • Any MOA hired before October 2022 is able to be certified or have completed CPOE education. This needs to be updated at the time of expiration.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Preferred minimum of one year work experience in health care field.
  • On the job training provided for further skills.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of health care field and/ or medical specialty.
  • Knowledge of specific assisting task related to health care or the particular medical specialty.
  • Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients/ families.
