Job Description:
Job Title: Financial Counselor
Department: Revenue Cycle Management
Location: Carolina Oncology Specialists Randolph Road Charlotte, NC
Reports To: Precertification/Authorization Manager
Position Summary
The Financial Counselor is responsible for guiding patients through the financial aspects of their oncology care, including insurance coverage, out-of-pocket costs, and payment options. This role provides compassionate, patient-centered support while ensuring accurate financial counseling, timely collections, and compliance with regulatory and payer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide financial counseling to patients regarding insurance benefits, coverage limitations, and estimated out-of-pocket costs for oncology services

  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits, including Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial plans

  • Educate patients on financial responsibility, available payment options, and organization policies

  • Access and enroll eligible patients into available financial assistance programs cand foundation grants

  • Manage and track claim submission to assistance programs for applicable services rendered

  • Obtain necessary financial agreements and upfront payments according to organization policies

  • Collaborate with clinical, scheduling, and billing teams to ensure timely and accurate financial clearance prior to services

  • Serve as a liaison between patients, insurance companies, and external assistance organizations

  • Monitor patient accounts for outstanding balances and follow up as appropriate

  • Maintain accurate documentation of all financial discussions in the electronic health record (EHR) and/or practice management system

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and organizational regulations related to billing and patient financial services

  • Identify barriers to payment and escalate concerns or trends to leadership

Qualifications
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in healthcare financial counseling, medical billing, or revenue cycle operations

  • Knowledge of insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payers

  • Strong understanding of patient financial responsibility and collections processes

  • Experience with EHR and practice management systems

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

Preferred:
  • Experience in oncology or specialty healthcare setting

  • Knowledge of financial assistance programs, co-pay cards, and foundations specific to oncology care

  • Certification in healthcare financial services or revenue cycle (e.g., CHAA, CRCS, or similar)
