Job description

Chatham Hall is excited to begin the search for a Director of the Health Care Center.
Chatham Hall, a girls’ grades 9-12 boarding and day school in southern Virginia, has been a leader in educating girls since 1894. The Director of the Health Care Center is responsible for the daily operations of the residential Health Care Center (HCC) and for establishing a proactive wellness approach for the Chatham Hall community.
The Director of the Health Care Center manages all matters pertaining to the Health Care Center Staff, including establishing policies and procedures to ensure quality care for the Chatham Hall community. Other tasks include participating in medical exams and reviewing findings to evaluate the health status and progress of students; providing emergency treatment and first aid to students and staff; collaborating with School personnel in identifying and meeting the social, emotional, and physical needs of students; and coordinating care and assisting in referrals to health agencies outside of Chatham Hall.
In addition to daily responsibilities, the next Director of the Health Care Center will have the chance to shape innovative wellness programs that truly support adolescents' health and development, inspiring a sense of purpose.

The primary focus of a Director of the Health Care Center includes, but is not limited to:
  • Supervise and/or administer primary care; provide assessment, examination, and referrals according to written medical directives; collect accurate health-related data.
  • Provide follow-up care, including medication, treatments, and healthcare information.
  • Collaborating closely with school personnel such as nurses, athletic trainers, and counselors, the Director will be integral to a supportive team dedicated to students' holistic health.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Counseling Services, the Director of Student and Community Life, and others to help support students’ ability to engage in Chatham Hall.
  • Assess data collected and make primary decisions on the health management of individual students.
  • Initiate counseling and health education to allow patients to cope with presenting issues as necessary.
  • Routinely act as a second-opinion consultant for nursing staff.
  • Maintain communication between the School, parents, and health professionals.
  • Maintains student health records up to date in Magnus and ensures proper documentation of physicals, immunizations, and insurance as required by the government and Chatham Hall.
  • Review all student health records and note all physical or emotional restrictions and allergies. Make faculty aware of these as deemed appropriate.
  • Assist with scheduling on- and off-campus appointments with psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychotherapists, collaborating with Chatham Hall’s Director of Counseling Services to assess students' counseling needs and make appropriate referrals.

Personnel and Administrative:
  • Supporting, supervising, developing, and scheduling the nursing staff and providers outside of the School to whom students are referred.
  • The management of all facilities operations as they relate to the medical/nursing needs of the Health Care Center, as well as confirmation of the professional certifications of Health Care Center staff and other health care providers who have contact with students.
  • Provides educational opportunities for faculty and staff to ensure employees meet the minimum yearly educational requirements established by the HCC.
  • Establishes and maintains policies, procedures, and protocols for HCC.
  • Ensures the Health Care Center is stocked with all necessary medications and equipment to meet the student population’s daily healthcare needs.
  • Monitors and oversees the Health Care Center’s yearly budget.
  • Maintain inventory of all medications, medical supplies, and equipment. Order supplies as needed within budgetary parameters
  • Hire, train, staff, schedule, and supervise the nursing staff.
  • Perform an annual evaluation of the nursing staff, identifying areas for individual improvement and ways to improve the overall quality of health care for the community.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with others at Chatham Hall to help create, develop, and implement education and programming focused on students' health and well-being.
  • Maintains, directs, and oversees the proper documentation of faculty and staff health-related professional development, such as CPR, blood-borne pathogens, and MAT training.
  • Participate in various school committees.
  • Attend faculty meetings and counseling group meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as directed, including those related to health education and programming, support, and student success.

Qualifications:
  • A candidate for this position must be a registered nurse or nurse practitioner licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • The candidate must have a special interest in adolescent health care and understand students' particular needs in a boarding school community.
  • Current CPR certification or willing to become certified in an approved course.
