What are Health Security Officers?

Health Security Officers are professionals responsible for ensuring the safety and security of health facilities, staff, patients, and visitors. They develop and implement security policies, conduct risk assessments, and respond to emergencies within healthcare environments. Their duties may also include monitoring access to sensitive areas, managing security systems, and collaborating with law enforcement or emergency responders. Health Security Officers play a crucial role in maintaining a safe environment to support the delivery of healthcare services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Health Security Officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Health Security Officer, you need expertise in public health, emergency preparedness, risk assessment, and relevant health security policies, typically supported by a degree in public health or a related field. Familiarity with incident management systems, biosurveillance tools, and certifications like Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) or Certified in Public Health (CPH) is often required. Outstanding communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills are essential for coordinating responses and engaging stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for effectively preventing, detecting, and responding to health threats in both routine and crisis situations.

How does a Health Security Officer typically collaborate with other departments to maintain workplace safety?

A Health Security Officer frequently works alongside HR, facilities management, and emergency response teams to develop and enforce health and safety protocols. This role often involves coordinating regular training sessions, conducting joint risk assessments, and sharing updates on regulatory compliance. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the officer must ensure that all departments understand and apply best practices to minimize health risks. Regular meetings and cross-departmental drills are common to keep everyone prepared and aligned.

Job description

Behavioral Health Security Officer

Pay: $30/hour

Schedule: 1st, 2nd, 3rd shift schedules are available

We are looking for Full-Time/Part-Time/Per Diem Officers

United Security is looking to hire Behavioral Health Security Officers to work under the supervision of medical professionals to help maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for behavioral health patients. They are responsible for observing patient behavior and applying de-escalation techniques to manage crisis situations safely.

Behavioral Health Security Officers work in high-stress environments that support children between the ages of 13 to 17 years old. This role requires significant patience, empathy and emotional resilience. Common work settings include inpatient psychiatric hospitals, residential addiction treatment centers, outpatient behavioral health facilities, and specialized care units. The role is physically and emotionally demanding, making a strong foundation in crisis management—such as CPI/MAB/MOAB training—critical for workplace safety.

Core Responsibilities

  • De-escalation & Crisis Management: Utilize verbal and physical intervention techniques to safely de-escalate aggressive or agitated patients and ensure a secure environment for all.
  • Patient Observation: Continuously monitor patient behavior, mood, and physical condition, documenting changes and reporting them directly to nurses or psychiatrists.
  • Therapeutic Support: Recognize mental health triggers, using communication and empathy to calm individuals rather than relying immediately on physical force.
  • Officer Presence: Providing a security presence that deters aggressive behavior and provides a sense of physical safety for vulnerable patients and medical staff.
  • Security measures (access control, surveillance) are integrated discreetly to provide reassurance to clients and families, allowing them to focus on recovery.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

  • CT Guard Card
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification is required upon hire.
  • Previous or current certifications & experience in CPI/MAB/MOAB/TIDES or similar training: Candidates must have a minimum of two years of full-time direct patient care experience working in a health care setting or behavioral health setting. Candidates must be trained in hands-on psychiatric restraint training to safely manage acutely agitated or violent individuals. Previous training and experience must emphasized de-escalation first, using physical holds only as a last resort to prevent injury to the patient or others.
  • Physical Capabilities: Ability to stand and walk for long periods, and physically participate in safe patient holds or restraints when necessary.
  • Must have the ability to speak, read and write in English
