About the Role
Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) seeks a highly analytical and collaborative Epidemiologist / Population Health Data Scientist to join the Department of Pediatrics in support of the Solve Sickle Cell Initiative. The successful candidate will lead and contribute to population health and outcomes research, design and analyze epidemiologic studies, and support the integration of basic science discoveries into clinical care across hospital and community settings. Findings from community implementation and health services research will, in turn, inform future translational and basic science questions, reinforcing a bidirectional research model.
Program Description
Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (Children's), and Emory University School of Medicine (Emory) are partnering in a $16M expansion of their Sickle Cell Disease Program called the Georgia Solve Sickle Cell Disease Initiative (Solve Sickle). The Initiative is supported by the Georgia Research Alliance, and investments from MSM, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and Emory University. This initiative will focus on the development, testing, and implementation of new therapies in sickle cell disease and includes the addition of three faculty members at Emory and MSM. The Department of Pediatics at MSM invites qualified applicants to apply for the keystone position of this initiative as Data Scientist/Epidemiologist.

Minimum Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Data Science, Public Health, Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related population science discipline; from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Familiarity with public health systems, health policy, and/or healthcare delivery systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong quantitative, analytical, statistical, and scientific writing skills.
- Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R, or equivalent tools)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated experience in population health research, clinical trials, and/or health outcomes research.
- Demonstrated record of research productivity, including peer-reviewed publications and successful collaborative research initiatives.
- Demonstrated history of external research funding, where relevant.
- Experience working in collaborative, multi-institutional research environments.
- Experience in sickle cell disease research, health informatics, population health, clinical trials, or related fields.

Roles and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership for the Innovate Care and Data Science Research Theme of the Solve Sickle Cell Initiative.
- Design and conduct population-based, epidemiologic, and health services research addressing sickle cell disease outcomes, symptomatology, self-management, care delivery, and survivorship.
- Participate in and help lead clinical trials, including pragmatic and implementation science studies focused on behavioral interventions, care delivery models, and health outcomes.
- Apply advanced statistical and epidemiologic methods to analyze clinical, claims, registry, and EHR data to evaluate patterns of care, quality, and disparities.
- Develop and evaluate interventions to improve screening, care coordination, and long-term outcomes.
- Lead and contribute to competitive extramural grant applications (e.g., R01, U01, or equivalent) as PI, Co-Investigator, or site lead.
- Demonstrate a strong track record of securing extramural research funding (note: language intentionally excludes "independent funding").
- Publish high-quality, peer-reviewed manuscripts and present findings at national and international scientific meetings.
- Collaborate effectively across Morehouse School of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and other Solve Sickle partners.
- Engage with statewide, national, and global research networks.
- Prepare scientific reports and communicate findings to academic, clinical, and community stakeholders.
- Contribute to the development of evidence-informed public health and care delivery strategies.
- Mentor research staff, trainees, and students in population health sciences, epidemiology, outcomes research, and clinical trial methodology.
- Ensure compliance with policies, federal regulations, and sponsor requirements across all research activities for Morehouse School of Medicine and its institutional partners.
