About us
The Financial Times is one of the world's leading news organisations, globally recognised for its authority, integrity and accuracy, with a mission to deliver quality information and services worldwide.
At the FT, curiosity thrives and ambitious thinking is rewarded. Here, you're given the chance to reach millions, create work that matters and deliver impartial journalism in a polarised world.
In our warm, collaborative culture, you'll connect with a diverse community of experts who support your growth, career aspirations and wellbeing.
Your future at the FT will be filled with opportunities that challenge and inspire you. With no fixed path, you'll discover new skills and forge a career that can take you anywhere.
Build a newsworthy career at the FT.
Our commitment to a fair and inclusive workplace
At the FT, we are committed to creating a fair and inclusive workplace where everyone has equal opportunity to succeed. We welcome and value different perspectives and strive to ensure all employees are heard and supported. We believe people do their best work when they can be themselves and have the flexibility they need to balance their work and personal lives. We are an equal opportunity employer and comply with all applicable laws prohibiting discrimination.
The role / Position overview
With over 170 subscribing investment management firms, MandateWire is a successful subscription business covering the investment activities of institutional investors across the globe.
We are looking for an inquisitive and creative journalist to join our team of reporters based in New York, producing daily news stories on American institutional investors-predominantly pension funds, foundations and insurers-within their specific beat.
This is an opportunity for someone who thrives in a collaborative and supportive environment, is driven by curiosity, and has a passion for producing accurate and timely news content. You will develop relationships with senior investment decision-makers, conduct interviews and analyse financial information to uncover relevant and newsworthy developments for MandateWire subscribers.
We are hiring at either Associate Reporter or Reporter level, with the level of appointment determined by the successful candidate's skills and experience.
Key responsibilities
  • Research and write accurate and timely daily news stories focused on institutional investment activity.
  • Build and maintain a strong network of senior institutional investment decision-makers.
  • Conduct telephone interviews with key sources across the Americas.
  • Analyse financial data, reports and other materials to identify relevant and newsworthy insights.
  • Meet daily, monthly and quarterly editorial deadlines.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues across the wider MandateWire team.
Required skills / experience
  • Journalism experience, preferably within financial services, investments, pensions or a related area.
  • Excellent interpersonal and interviewing skills, including a confident and professional telephone manner.
  • Exceptional organisational skills, with the ability to effectively manage deadlines and workflows.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to sift through large datasets and identify relevant material.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with strong data interpretation skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • A collaborative and adaptable approach to working as part of a team.
  • Previous experience interviewing senior professionals is desirable.
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is desirable.
What's in it for you? Our benefits
Our benefits vary by location but we are committed to providing best-in-class perks across all our offices. These include generous annual leave, health coverage, 401k and company match, inclusive parental leave packages, subsidised gym memberships and opportunities to give back to the community. Full details of our benefits are available here.
We currently operate a hybrid model which requires staff to work onsite 50% of the time, subject to role requirements & regular review. While flexible working requests will be considered, not all patterns are suitable for all roles. We believe this balanced approach supports flexibility and protects our culture, making collaboration and communication easier, building stronger relationships and team cohesion, and supporting peer learning. We reserve discretion on reasonable notice to change this approach either generally or for specific individuals or teams.
Accessibility
We are a disability confident employer and Valuable 500 signatory.
Please let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments/personalisation as part of the application process or to enable you to attend an interview. If you would like to discuss your requirements or have any questions, email talent@ft.com and a member of our team will be happy to help.
Further information
The salary for the Associate Reporter level is $66,330. The reasonable estimate of the salary range for the Reporter level is $71,000-$75,000.
The deadline to apply is September 21 at 5:00 p.m. ET. We will begin the recruitment process after the application deadline has closed.
To ensure pay fairness, the successful candidate will be offered a salary appropriate to the level of appointment based on a number of considerations including but not limited to: skills; experience and training; certifications; and other business and organisational needs. The disclosed salary and range are for our NYC office and have not been adjusted for other locations.
This position is represented by the Writers Guild of America East.
