Job description

Location: Sun Health Grandview Terrace - Sun City, AZ

Pay Transparency: $28.00 per administrative hour (30 hours per week) + $40.00 per hour for personal training services, health coaching services, and/or group fitness class delivery (up to 10 hours per week): Minimum rates may vary based on local wage laws. Pay depends on factors including site location, specialty, certifications, work experience, and other business needs.

Role and Responsibilities

The Activate Health & Fitness Coach is responsible for managing the experience of participants in an 18-month Activate Pilot at Sun Health’s Grandview Terrace Senior Living Community. The Pilot will study how a progressive, data-driven, functional longevity program impacts the overall health and wellbeing of Sun Health residents. The successful completion of this Pilot will include: 1) Strong engagement among participants, 2) Low attrition, 3) Robust data collection, 4) Meaningful improvements in biometric health markers, functional independence, and overall well-being of participants. 

The Activate Health & Fitness Coach is responsible for program onboarding and assessments, personal training and health coaching, educating participants on the safe and correct use of cardio and weight training equipment, answering fitness and wellness related questions, selling personal training and health coaching, and being responsive by offering assistance to management, staff and participants when needed. This person will maintain the high quality standards of the Activate Pilot and will create an exceptional resident experience, thereby assisting with overall participant satisfaction and retention. 

The Activate Health & Fitness Coach is responsible for carrying out Active’s commitment to service its members in the best environment possible with the friendliest staff, most educated members, cleanest facility, most ethical business practices and state of the art equipment. The Activate Health & Fitness Coach will deliver on Active Wellness’ commitment to build healthy communities  through our core values of authenticity, teamwork, innovation, versatility, and excellence.

Specific Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Schedule and conduct participant onboarding sessions, including health history, functional and biometric assessments, and equipment orientation.
  • Develop Personal Action Plans, including fitness, nutrition and lifestyle behaviors.
  • Schedule and conduct personal training and health coaching sessions.
  • Sell and deliver additional personal training and/or health coaching sessions to clients as desired.
  • Identify behavior and habit changes to help patients transform their lives.
  • Provide motivation, guidance, support, and encouragement.
  • Work one-on-one with clients to establish a personalized wellness plan to improve health metrics. 
  • Identify short-term and long-term exercise, nutrition, and weight management goals.
  • Assist clients in making behavior changes and providing on-going follow up.  
  • Track improvements in health behaviors and biometric measurements using provided technology platforms.
  • Assist members in using safe and effective exercise form during their workouts.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and orderly fitness floor, racking weights, picking up towels, water bottles, magazines, cleaning equipment, etc.
  • Support, teach, and encourage members to meet their goals.
  • Develop and maintain supportive and productive relationships with residents, community leadership and staff, and health care providers.
  • Enforce Active Wellness and Grandview Terrace policies such as cell phone use, etc.
  • Attend virtual training meetings and continuing education classes to keep certifications current.
  • Assist in development and implementation of Activate programs and classes.
  • Administer emergency care to team members and participants in need of assistance.
  • Work as a TEAM with all other departments.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Other Functions

  • Be knowledgeable about all programs and activities included in the Activate Pilot. 
  • Assist with keeping the center well-stocked and clean.
  • Attend virtual Active Wellness meetings and trainings.
  • Handle injury/illness and security incident reporting.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • National Personal Training Certification.
  • Nationally recognized Health Coach Certification a plus.
  • Degree in exercise science or fitness related field a plus.
  • Experience working with older adults in a fitness setting a plus.
  • Operational knowledge of resistance training equipment and proper form.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics.
  • Knowledge of appropriate exercises for specific muscle groups.
  • Knowledge of injury prevention and basic rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge of basic movement and posture assessments and body composition assessments.
  • Ability to calculate target heart rate.
  • Basic knowledge in nutrition.
  • Must be detail oriented, organized and highly responsive with a commitment to customer service.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills, customer service skills, results oriented, ability to multitask, and commitment to the fitness industry.
  • AED/CPR/First Aid Certified.
  • Proof of citizenship or legal status.

Physical and Working Conditions

  • Ability to take the responsibility for the health and safety of others.
  • Ability to stand for several hours in a same shift; ability to lift 25 lbs.
  • Fitness center and senior living environment.
  • Must follow OSHA, Active Wellness, and Sun Health safety standards.
