The Head Coach will be responsible for teaching and coaching middle and high school student-athletes while fostering a high-energy, positive, and inclusive team culture that reflects the mission and values of Girard College.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong knowledge of wrestling rules, techniques, strategies, conditioning, and safety practices and will support the academic, athletic, personal, and social development of student-athletes. The Head Coach will work collaboratively with the Athletic Director, coaching staff, student-athletes, families, faculty, and staff to support the overall success and well-being of the program.

Responsibilities
The Head Wrestling Coach is responsible for leading, developing, and overseeing the middle and high school wrestling program at Girard College. Responsibilities include planning and conducting practices and competitions, developing in-season and approved off-season training programs, evaluating student-athlete and team performance, promoting academic success and student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive team culture.
The Head Coach will establish and implement a wrestling program that supports the athletic, academic, personal, and social development of student-athletes. The Head Coach will also work with the Athletic Director and, when appropriate, the Admissions Office to identify prospective student-athletes who may be a good fit for Girard College.
The Head Coach must adhere to all applicable Girard College policies and procedures and the rules and regulations of the Penn-Jersey Athletic Association (P.J.A.A.), Metropolitan Philadelphia Athletic Association (M.P.A.A.), Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (P.A.I.S.A.A.), Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (P.I.A.A.), and other applicable governing organizations.
Required Skills
Ability to lead, organize, monitor, and coordinate wrestling practices, training sessions, and competitions. Strong knowledge of wrestling rules, techniques, strategies, conditioning, and safety practices. Ability to motivate, teach, and develop student-athletes while promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and personal responsibility. Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with student-athletes, families, coaches, administrators, faculty, and staff. Ability to consistently model exemplary sportsmanship and professional conduct. Ability to support the academic, physical, emotional, and social development of adolescent student-athletes. Ability to identify, address, and resolve issues involving student-athletes, the team, or members of the coaching staff. Ability to work effectively in an educational environment and build positive relationships with students, families, administrators, teachers, and staff. Ability to sit and stand for extended periods and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
Required Duties
Organize, prepare, and conduct open wrestling tryouts. Plan and conduct daily practices, training sessions, and competitions. Develop and implement effective in-season and approved off-season conditioning and training programs. Determine and implement appropriate wrestling systems, strategies, and techniques. Assist the Athletic Director with scheduling competitions and other program-related activities. Monitor student-athlete academic progress and work with appropriate school personnel to address academic concerns and support student success. Provide guidance and support to promote student-athlete welfare and a positive academic and athletic experience at Girard College. Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful team environment that promotes sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, leadership, and personal responsibility. Evaluate individual and team performance and communicate areas for improvement. Follow the care plans and recommendations of the athletic training staff regarding the prevention and care of injuries and other health-related concerns. Follow all applicable wrestling safety standards and procedures, including appropriate practices related to weight management, hydration, skin infections, concussion management, and injury prevention. Maintain timely and professional communication with student-athletes and families regarding schedules, expectations, team activities, and program-related matters. Support the Athletic Director and, when appropriate, the Admissions Office in identifying prospective student-athletes who may be a good fit for Girard College. Recommend equipment, uniforms, and supplies needed to support the wrestling program. Distribute, collect, inventory, and maintain the proper care, cleaning, and storage of team equipment, uniforms, and supplies. Coordinate and/or provide team transportation to competitions as assigned and ensure school vehicles are properly maintained when applicable. Recommend the hiring of assistant coaches and assist with the training, supervision, and evaluation of coaching staff. Maintain appropriate conduct and sportsmanship among student-athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators. Enforce Girard College policies, Athletic Department policies, team rules, travel expectations, codes of conduct, and applicable league and governing-body regulations; report significant violations to the Athletic Director. Ensure that the goals and objectives of the wrestling program support the mission and objectives of Girard College and comply with institutional policies and applicable league regulations. Maintain non-discriminatory practices in all team and program activities. Attend Athletic Department and staff meetings as requested by the Athletic Director. Perform other wrestling-related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.
Hours
In-Season
The wrestling season generally lasts 8–10 weeks and may extend to approximately 12 weeks if the team participates in postseason competition. The Head Wrestling Coach is expected to conduct practices for approximately two hours per day, Monday–Friday, and be available for Saturday practices, competitions, tournaments, or other program activities when necessary. The Head Coach is required to attend all scheduled home and away competitions and other events directly related to the wrestling program.
Off-Season
The Head Wrestling Coach is expected to conduct approved off-season workouts and conditioning sessions in coordination with the Athletic Director. All off-season activities must be approved in advance by the Athletic Director.
QualificationsQualifications
A bachelor’s degree is required. A minimum of three years of head coaching experience at the middle school, high school, collegiate, or professional level is preferred.
The candidate must have completed all required Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) coaching education requirements at the time of hire.
The successful candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills and a willingness to work collaboratively with student-athletes, families, administration, faculty, staff, and members of the Athletic Department.
Required Certifications and Clearances
Complete all required PIAA coaching education requirements. Maintain current First Aid and CPR/AED certifications. Pass FBI fingerprint/background check. Pass Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance. Pass Pennsylvania Criminal History Background Check. Possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
