Job description
San Francisco University High School | San Francisco, California
San Francisco University High School (UHS) is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as our next Golf Program Director and Varsity Head Coach, leading our Girls Golf program in the fall and Boys Golf program in the spring.
We are looking for more than a golf coach. We are looking for someone to lead, build, and grow the University Golf program.
This is a unique opportunity. University is restarting its Girls Golf program, giving the next Program Director the chance to build a program, create a culture, and introduce more student-athletes to the game. In the spring, the Program Director will lead our established Boys Golf program and continue its competitive development.
The next leader of University Golf will bring energy, knowledge of the game, and a clear vision for developing student-athletes. They will understand the unique challenge of creating a connected team within an individual sport and build an environment where golfers compete for one another, support their teammates, and take pride in representing University.
UHS is guided by the core values of Inquiry, Care, Integrity, Agency, and Interconnection. Our Athletics Department believes athletics are an essential part of the educational experience and an opportunity for students to develop confidence, resilience, leadership, teamwork, and a sense of belonging.
ABOUT UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL
Founded in 1975, UHS is a coeducational independent day school serving approximately 540 students in grades 9-12 in San Francisco. Our mission challenges each individual to live a life of integrity, inquiry, and purpose larger than the self.
University Athletics sponsors 23 varsity teams, with many programs also competing at the junior varsity and Frosh/Soph levels.
THE ROLE
The Golf Program Director and Varsity Head Coach serves as the competitive, cultural, and strategic leader of University Golf.
The Program Director will lead Girls Golf during the fall season and Boys Golf during the spring season, establishing a unified vision for player development, program culture, and competitive success.
A significant part of this opportunity will be the relaunch and growth of Girls Golf at University. The Program Director will engage student-athletes within the school community, create an inclusive entry point for newer golfers, and build a program designed for long-term participation and success.
The Program Director will also serve as a key representative of University Athletics in our relationship with Presidio Golf Club, where our teams practice and host home matches. Maintaining a strong, professional, and collaborative partnership with the club and its staff will be essential to the success and long-term growth of University Golf.
This role goes beyond managing matches and setting lineups. The Program Director will develop golfers at varying skill levels and create a team experience where students are challenged, supported, and excited to represent University.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Set the vision, standards, and direction for the University Golf program.
- Lead the Girls Golf program in the fall and Boys Golf program in the spring.
- Relaunch and intentionally grow the University Girls Golf program.
- Engage and develop students with varying levels of golf experience.
- Plan and lead organized, purposeful, and engaging practices and training sessions.
- Develop student-athletes in golf fundamentals, short game, course management, and competitive strategy.
- Help golfers develop the mental approach, confidence, and resilience necessary to compete.
- Build a team culture rooted in accountability, sportsmanship, competitive excellence, and joy.
- Create a strong sense of team and shared purpose within an individual sport.
- Build and maintain a strong working relationship with Presidio Golf Club and its staff.
- Coordinate professionally with the club regarding practices, home matches, schedules, and program needs.
- Prepare student-athletes for league, postseason, and tournament competition.
- Manage lineups, match strategy, tournament preparation, and program logistics.
- Partner with Athletics staff, athletic trainers, and Sports Performance staff to support student-athlete development.
- Support and encourage multi-sport participation.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with student-athletes and families.
- Lead approved offseason development, clinics, and long-term program planning.
- Follow all UHS, league, North Coast Section, CIF, and NFHS policies and expectations.
- Represent University Athletics with professionalism, integrity, and care.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The successful candidate will bring leadership, golf knowledge, emotional intelligence, and a genuine commitment to growing the game and working with high school student-athletes.
Ideal candidates will have:

- The ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with golf facilities, club professionals, and community partners.
- Experience leading a team, program, or group of student-athletes.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- An understanding of golf etiquette, sportsmanship, and the integrity of the game.
- A student-centered approach that balances competitive expectations with personal development.
- A collaborative, dependable, and team-first mindset.
Collegiate playing experience, PGA experience, or professional golf instruction experience is preferred but not required.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
The selected candidate must complete all UHS and CIF coaching requirements, including CPR/First Aid, CIF/NFHS Coaching Certification, Concussion Education, Sudden Cardiac Arrest Training, Heat Illness Prevention, and all required background clearances.
POSITION & COMPENSATION DETAILS
This is a year-round coaching and program leadership position.
Compensation ranges from $12,000 to $16,000 for the competitive seasons, based on experience and qualifications.
Afternoon, evening, and occasional weekend availability is required during the competitive seasons, with additional availability throughout the year to support program development and planning.
READY TO LEAD UNIVERSITY GOLF?

This is an opportunity to lead an established Boys program, help write the next chapter of Girls Golf at University, and build upon an important partnership with Presidio Golf Club.
If you are excited about leading a competitive, student-centered golf program and making a meaningful impact on young people, we encourage you to apply through the University High School website.
