General Function
The Instructor is a member of the ranked faculty whose duties require effectiveness in teaching, a commitment to staying current with their discipline and appropriate pedagogies, and a willingness to serve the academic unit, college and/or University. The Instructor's teaching responsibilities are assigned by the academic department head and may include serving as an academic advisor. Effective January 1 2007, the Instructor rank is a tenure-track appointment only for faculty appointed by the two-year open admissions campus at West Plains and the Greenwood Laboratory School.
Description of Primary Duties
  • Design and deliver engaging, rigorous English Language Arts instruction for students.
  • Create a student-centered learning environment that promotes critical thinking, effective communication, creativity, analysis, and a lifelong appreciation for reading and writing.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans and learning experiences aligned with course standards and Greenwood's college-preparatory mission.
  • Facilitate discussion-based learning that encourages thoughtful analysis of literature, diverse perspectives, effective argumentation, and clear written and oral communication.
  • Provide instruction in writing processes, grammar, research, literary analysis, and presentation skills across multiple genres and formats.
  • Utilize instructional technology and varied teaching strategies to enhance student engagement, collaboration, and academic growth.
  • Differentiate instruction and provide appropriate academic support to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Assess student learning through formative and summative assessments, essays, projects, presentations, and discussion-based activities; use assessment data to guide instruction and provide meaningful feedback.
  • Maintain high academic and behavioral expectations while fostering positive relationships and a respectful classroom culture.
  • Communicate effectively and proactively with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, and administrators regarding student progress, expectations, and support strategies.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to support interdisciplinary initiatives, curriculum development, student success, and school improvement efforts.
  • Encourage and support student participation in enrichment opportunities such as writing contests, publications, speech and debate, performances, or other academic activities when appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate records related to attendance, grades, assessments, and student progress in accordance with school policies and timelines.
  • Demonstrate professionalism through reliability, confidentiality, flexibility, reflective practice, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Participate fully in the life of the school community, including faculty meetings, professional development, student activities, and other assigned duties.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a small-school environment that values innovation, initiative, relationship-building, and a strong commitment to student growth and achievement.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Instructor are prescribed in the Faculty Handbook.
Additional Qualifications
  • A Master's degree or higher in English, English Education, Language Arts, Education, or a related field is required.
  • Appropriate Missouri teacher certification in secondary English Language Arts is required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience teaching middle school and/or high school English courses in a rigorous college-preparatory environment.
  • Candidates should demonstrate strong knowledge of literature, composition, grammar, research, and writing instruction across multiple grade levels.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience facilitating discussion-based instruction, analytical writing, and interdisciplinary learning experiences.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and support a wide range of student learning needs is preferred.
  • Candidates should demonstrate strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to integrate instructional technology and innovative teaching practices into English Language Arts instruction is preferred.
  • Commitment to fostering positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues in a collaborative school environment is expected.
