What does a head athletic trainer do?

A Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for overseeing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of sports-related injuries within an organization, such as a school, college, or professional sports team. They lead and manage a team of athletic trainers, coordinate care with physicians, and ensure athletes follow proper rehabilitation protocols. Additionally, they develop injury prevention programs, maintain medical records, and often handle administrative duties such as budgeting and compliance with safety regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a head athletic trainer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Head Athletic Trainer, you need expertise in injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in athletic training and national certification (such as the BOC certification). Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems, therapeutic modalities, and emergency care protocols is also essential. Balancing administrative duties—such as budgeting, compliance, and record-keeping—with direct athlete care requires strong organizational skills. Effective communication and collaboration with coaches, physicians, and athletes are essential for ensuring injury prevention and optimal recovery.
