Job description

Standish Hardware is hiring a full-time Retail Hardware Sales Associate to join our team in Standish, Maine. In this role, you will help customers find the right tools, materials, and home improvement products, provide friendly and knowledgeable service, and support the day-to-day operations of a busy hardware store. We are looking for someone with retail hardware experience who enjoys working with people and takes pride in helping neighbors get the job done.

For more than 50 years, Standish Hardware has been the locally owned store our community counts on. We are a full-service hardware store and a whole lot more. Alongside tools, paint, plumbing, and electrical, we carry animal feed, fill propane, exchange welding gas, cut keys and glass, mix paint, and rent equipment. We like to say we are the problem solvers, and we would love to add another one to our team.

Responsibilities
  • Greet customers and help them find the right products, tools, and materials for their projects
  • Answer product questions and offer knowledgeable recommendations across the store, from hardware and paint to feed, plumbing, and electrical
  • Ring up sales accurately at the register with a friendly, helpful attitude
  • Assist with our in-store services, including paint mixing, propane filling, key and glass cutting, and equipment rentals (we will train you)
  • Receive, unpack, price, and stock merchandise, and keep the sales floor clean, organized, and well stocked
  • Support seasonal displays, promotions, and merchandising
  • Monitor inventory and let management know when products are running low
  • Follow safe work practices and work as a team to keep the store running smoothly
Qualifications
  • Retail hardware experience is strongly preferred and is ideal for this role
  • Real knowledge of, or a strong interest in, tools, building materials, and home improvement products
  • Strong customer service and communication skills; friendly, patient, and solution-oriented
  • Reliable, organized, and able to manage several tasks in a busy retail environment
  • Comfortable using a point-of-sale register and basic computer applications
  • Able to lift, carry, and move merchandise as needed, and to stand for much of the shift
Schedule
  • Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Includes Sundays as one of your regular scheduled days
  • Occasional evenings and holidays depending on store needs
Pay & Benefits
  • $18 to $20 per hour, with room for more based on your experience
  • Paid holidays
  • One week (40 hours) of paid vacation after your first year, increasing to two weeks (80 hours) after three years
  • Employee discount on store purchases (our cost plus 10%)
  • On-the-job training in our specialty products and services
  • A friendly, close-knit team and the satisfaction of helping neighbors finish their projects
