Hardware Security Engineer information

What does a hardware security engineer do?

A Hardware Security Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing security measures to protect hardware systems from attacks and vulnerabilities. They analyze potential threats, develop secure hardware architectures, and work on cryptographic implementations to safeguard devices. Their role often involves collaborating with software security teams to ensure end-to-end system protection. Additionally, they conduct security assessments, penetration testing, and work on mitigating risks related to hardware tampering and side-channel attacks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware security engineer?

To thrive as a Hardware Security Engineer, you need a strong background in computer engineering, cryptography, embedded systems, and a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like FPGA/ASIC design software, hardware security modules (HSMs), and certifications such as CISSP or CEH are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you efficiently address security threats and collaborate across departments. These skills and qualities are critical because the role involves protecting physical devices against sophisticated cyber threats while ensuring secure system functionality.

What are some typical challenges faced by hardware security engineers in their day-to-day work?

Hardware Security Engineers often face the challenge of identifying and mitigating sophisticated threats such as side-channel attacks, hardware Trojans, and supply chain vulnerabilities. They frequently collaborate with software engineers, design teams, and security analysts to ensure holistic protection of hardware products from concept through production. Staying up to date with rapidly evolving attack methods and security standards requires continual learning and adaptability. The role demands a balance between designing secure systems and maintaining product performance, making creative problem-solving and effective cross-functional communication essential skills for success.

  • Perform threat modeling, code reviews, and design tests to identify and mitigate potential vulnerabilities in cryptographic protocols and custody systems.

To be successful in this role, we're seeking the following:

  • Expertise in secure software development and cryptography engineering, with hands-on experience in cryptographic protocols and secure coding practices.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++, Go, or Rust, and familiarity with cryptographic libraries like OpenSSL or MPC-specific libraries.
  • Strong knowledge of hardware security features including Intel SGX, hardware security modules (HSMs), and trusted execution environments with remote attestation.
  • Experience integrating with blockchain nodes/APIs, understanding blockchain transaction formats (e.g., Bitcoin UTXOs, Ethereum RLP), and building wallet backend systems.
  • Solid skills in threat modeling, networking (sockets, RPC frameworks), concurrency control, secure storage, and cloud security best practices.
  • Familiarity with containerization and secure deployment environments is a plus.
  • 15+ years of experience in software development required; experience in the securities or financial services industry is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience required; advanced degree is beneficial.
