Hardware Associate information

What is a hardware associate?

Hardware Associates are retail employees who specialize in assisting customers with hardware products and home improvement supplies. They help customers locate items, provide product information, and advise on the best tools or materials for specific projects. Additionally, Hardware Associates may be responsible for stocking shelves, maintaining store displays, and ensuring the sales floor is organized. Their role is vital in providing excellent customer service and supporting the overall operations of hardware or home improvement stores.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hardware associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hardware Associate, you need basic knowledge of hardware products, inventory management, and customer service, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory tracking software, and product stocking tools is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and a helpful attitude are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure efficient operations, accurate inventory, and excellent customer experiences in retail hardware environments.

What are some typical challenges hardware associates face when assisting customers in a retail hardware environment?

Hardware Associates often encounter challenges such as helping customers find the right products for specific projects, especially when customers are unfamiliar with technical terms or materials. They must stay knowledgeable about a wide range of products, keep up with inventory changes, and sometimes troubleshoot basic DIY questions on the spot. Effective communication and patience are essential, as the role requires explaining complex information in simple terms and ensuring customers leave with the correct items for their needs.

Position Overview

Cross Ace Hardware is looking for a motivated, outgoing, and customer-focused Outdoor Power Equipment & Hardware Sales Associate. This position is responsible for selling and promoting our outdoor power equipment and recreational equipment, including zero-turn mowers, UTVs, ATVs, and mini excavators, while also providing excellent customer service to customers throughout the hardware store.

The ideal candidate is comfortable talking with customers, following up on sales leads, learning equipment features, and taking initiative to generate new business. This position combines commission-based equipment sales with traditional hardware store customer service.

Key ResponsibilitiesEquipment Sales
  • Sell zero-turn mowers, UTVs, ATVs, and mini excavators to retail and commercial customers.
  • Develop a strong understanding of equipment features, benefits, financing options, accessories, and applications.
  • Ask questions to understand customer needs and recommend the right equipment for their property or project.
  • Provide professional product demonstrations when appropriate.
  • Prepare quotes and assist customers through the purchasing process.
  • Work toward individual and store sales goals.
  • Build relationships with customers to generate repeat and referral business.
Lead Management & Follow-Up
  • Call new sales leads promptly and professionally.
  • Follow up consistently with previous leads, quotes, and potential customers.
  • Maintain organized records of customer contacts and sales opportunities.
  • Contact customers who have shown interest in equipment but have not yet made a purchase.
  • Develop leads into completed sales through consistent communication and excellent customer service.
Facebook Marketplace & Online Sales
  • Create and maintain Facebook Marketplace listings for available equipment.
  • Take quality photos and write accurate, appealing equipment descriptions.
  • Respond promptly to online inquiries and messages.
  • Monitor Marketplace activity and turn online inquiries into store visits and equipment sales.
  • Keep listings current with accurate pricing, availability, and equipment information.
Hardware Store Customer Service
  • Assist customers with their everyday hardware, home improvement, lawn & garden, and project needs.
  • Help customers locate products throughout the store.
  • Answer questions and provide knowledgeable product recommendations.
  • Provide friendly, professional, and helpful customer service to every customer.
  • Assist with checkout, stocking, merchandising, and general store duties as needed.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and properly merchandised sales areas.
  • Be willing to assist customers even when an equipment sale is not involved.
Commission Opportunity

This position includes commission opportunities on qualifying sales of zero-turn mowers, UTVs, ATVs, mini excavators, and other designated equipment.

The employee is expected to actively generate sales through:

  • In-store customer interactions
  • Outbound lead calls
  • Lead follow-up
  • Customer referrals
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Product demonstrations
  • Repeat customers

Commission details, qualifying products, and payment structure will be outlined separately by management.

Qualifications
  • Previous sales, retail, hardware, lawn & garden, agricultural, automotive, powersports, or equipment experience is preferred but not required.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Comfortable making outbound sales calls and following up with customers.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Comfortable using Facebook Marketplace and basic computer/mobile technology.
  • Ability to learn and explain equipment features and product specifications.
  • Professional, friendly, and dependable attitude.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Willingness to help wherever needed in the store.
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys selling but also enjoys helping people. You should be comfortable approaching customers, asking questions, making recommendations, and following a customer from their initial inquiry all the way through the sale.

This is not a position where the employee simply waits for equipment customers to walk through the door. Success requires actively pursuing leads, making calls, following up, creating Marketplace listings, and developing relationships while continuing to provide excellent service to all Cross Ace Hardware customers.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry merchandise consistent with normal hardware store duties.
  • Ability to safely work around outdoor power equipment and recreational equipment.
  • Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to assist with loading or preparing equipment for customers as required.
Performance Expectations

Success in this position will be measured by:

  • Equipment sales volume
  • Lead conversion and follow-up
  • Number and quality of customer contacts
  • Facebook Marketplace activity and resulting sales
  • Customer satisfaction
  • Product knowledge
  • Store sales and customer service
  • Reliability, teamwork, and overall contribution to the Cross Ace Hardware team

Cross Ace Hardware is looking for someone who wants to build a career in sales, develop strong customer relationships, and earn additional income through performance-based commissions.

We are your local hardware store and we are a part of your community. Ace Hardware has over 5,000 stores around the world with the majority of those stores independently owned and operated by local entrepreneurs. These hard working men and women are part of the fabric of your community. They are small business owners who are local and loyal...just like it ought to be. While others have become large and impersonal, at Ace, we've remained small and very personal. That's why we say a visit to Ace, is like a visit to your neighbor.
