These services can include fixing leaky faucets, assembling furniture, painting, minor electrical and plumbing work, and other general repairs. Handymen are skilled in various trades and are often hired for jobs that are too small or varied for specialized contractors. Hiring a handyman can save time and ensure that maintenance tasks are completed safely and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a handyman?

To thrive as a Handyman, you need expertise in general repairs, basic plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with a wide range of tools, power equipment, and sometimes local licensing or certification is required, depending on the tasks and region. Strong problem-solving skills, reliability, and clear communication with clients make someone stand out in this role. Effective time management and communication are essential, as priorities may shift due to urgent requests or unforeseen complications. Job description

Why this roleMost handyman jobs treat you like a pair of hands. This one treats you like the face of the business. Our customers invite us into their homes and judge everything — the workmanship, the cleanup, the way we explain what we're doing and why. We're looking for an experienced technician who takes as much pride in how they leave a customer feeling as in how they leave the work looking.About TruBlue Home Service AllyTruBlue Home Service Ally provides handyman services, home maintenance, and senior-focused home safety modifications for busy families and older adults who want one trusted, background-checked partner for their home. We win on reliability and trust: we show up when we say we will, do the job right, and leave the home better than we found it.About the roleTwelve months in, success looks like this: you're the technician our repeat customers ask for by name. Your jobs come back clean on quality checks, your reviews mention you personally, and you can walk into an unfamiliar problem — a door that won't close, a leak with no obvious source — diagnose it, explain the options in plain language, and fix it right the first time. What you'll do
  • Complete a wide variety of residential repairs and maintenance: carpentry, drywall, painting, basic plumbing, basic electrical, fixture installation, and punch lists
  • Diagnose problems on-site and explain options, costs, and timelines to homeowners in plain language
  • Own the customer experience end to end — arrive on time, communicate proactively if anything changes, and confirm the customer is satisfied before you leave
  • Keep job sites clean and treat every home with respect — shoe covers, drop cloths, full cleanup
  • Represent the company professionally in appearance and conduct
  • Flag additional repair or maintenance needs honestly — recommendations customers can trust, never upselling for its own sake
What we're looking forRequired
  • 3+ years of paid experience in handyman work, home repair, remodeling, or construction
  • Proficiency across multiple trades: carpentry, drywall, painting, basic plumbing, and basic electrical
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Your own truck or van capable of hauling tools and materials
  • Your own hand and power tools
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Clear, courteous communication — you're comfortable talking with homeowners, not just working around them
Nice to have
  • A trade license (plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or general contractor)
  • Experience with property maintenance or senior home safety modifications (grab bars, ramps, accessibility work)
  • Comfort documenting jobs with photos and notes in a mobile app
Schedule and structureWe're flexible: full-time, part-time, or steady project work — and open to hiring the right person as a W-2 employee or engaging them as a 1099 subcontractor (subcontractors carry their own general liability insurance). Tell us what arrangement works for you and we'll figure out the fit.
