Job description

Job Summary: 

As a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), you play a crucial role in delivering exceptional patient care to individuals in critical condition. Your responsibilities in the ICU will include monitoring and providing specialized medical care to patients, collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team, and maintaining a safe and comfortable environment. Your dedication and expertise are essential in ensuring the well-being and recovery of patients in this high-acuity setting.

The RN – ICU Staff Nurse shall implement the nursing process in an organized, systematic manner to include assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation as evidenced by direct observation of the patient, continuous monitoring of lab values and results, imaging results, appropriate notification and communication with provider and other members of care team, and complete, timely documentation in chart. The RN is responsible to the Charge Nurse for patient care and ultimately accountable to the Unit Director. 

Performance Expectations:

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served; also demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed.
  • Demonstrates ability to care for the critically ill patient in all aspects of their necessary nursing care.
  • Demonstrates thorough, concise, and timely documentation, shift reports, and verbal communication. Communicate pertinent patient information to all health care team members.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assist in the coordination of services with the medical staff, nursing staff, and other departments as well as other providers. Responds rapidly and effectively during emergency situations. demonstrating knowledge of the ACLS algorithms and critical care medications.
  • Maintains own clinical skills staying current in skills, ongoing competencies, equipment, and certifications required in specific nursing area.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform all technical skills required for the unit’s population by rendering professional nursing care including administering medications, starting IVs, insertion and maintenance of foleys, venipuncture, blood products administration, restraint application, sterile dressing, maintenance of all lines (i.e. central, arterial, peripheral), ventilated patients, and tracheostomies.
  • Implements a systematic and comprehensive plan of care to provide individualized care and educates patient and family about diagnosis, treatments, or prescribed medical regimen and medications in accordance with patient and family readiness and ability to learn.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills and uses professional judgement to respond promptly with intervention when clinical changes occur.
  • Communicates effectively with others in an appropriate and timely manner. Adheres to and promotes the established values of the organization, i.e. customer service, safety, infection control, and compliance standards.
  • Consistently follows patient care and HCH policy, procedures, and standards of care in performing nursing duties.
  • Provides for exceptional patient and co-worker experiences by following our standards of practice of always using positive language.
  • Properly utilizes the equipment assigned including but not limited to telemetry monitors, wound vacs, IV infusion pumps, accucheck, defibrillator, and ventilators.
  • Move equipment and patients utilizing safety measures for both yourself and/or the patient.
  • Complete thorough physical assessment of patients and report any identified decline in change of status to the supervisor and provider on duty.
  • Always respect and maintain confidentiality and dignity of the patient by utilizing the We C.A.R.E philosophy.
  • Identify patients and complete barcode scanning and medication administration accurately.
  • Accurately enter provider-generated orders into the Electronic Health Record.
  • Collect, label, and deliver specimens to Lab in a timely manner.
  • Prioritize workload while completing multi-task.
  • Utilize the EMR for the provision of patient care.
  • Educate the patient and family on diagnosis, care being provided, and medications.
  • Supervise and delegate patient care tasks to team members including nurse aides, volunteers, and ancillary department staff.
  • Maintain Isolation Procedures as ordered.
  • Perform Hand Hygiene with 100 percent compliance.
  • Behaviors and interactions demonstrate a positive attitude, personal initiative, and motivation to achieve the department's goals.
  • Champions the development and growth of safety culture.
  • Participates in all competencies planned for the job role before deadlines.
  • Complies with the departmental and facility policy.
  • Follows the policies in the Employee Handbook.
  • Uses “We Care” philosophy in daily communication.
  • Required appropriate use of the department’s communication app.

Qualifications:

Education/Skills        

Graduate of a recognized and accredited non-online RN program. 

Work Experience:    

            One year medical/surgical nursing care preferred.

            ICU experience preferred.
