What is a hairstylist intern?

Hairstylist Interns are individuals who are training under the supervision of experienced hairstylists to learn the skills and techniques necessary for a career in hair styling. They typically work in salons, assisting with tasks such as shampooing, blow-drying, organizing supplies, and observing licensed stylists as they cut, color, and style clients' hair. Internships provide hands-on experience and an opportunity to develop customer service skills, product knowledge, and professional etiquette. Many hairstylist interns are students enrolled in cosmetology programs and use internships to fulfill licensing requirements and gain real-world experience.

What tasks and responsibilities can a hairstylist intern expect during their internship?

As a Hairstylist Intern, you can expect to assist senior stylists with a variety of tasks, such as shampooing clients’ hair, prepping workstations, cleaning tools, and organizing supplies. You may also observe and eventually participate in basic haircuts, blowouts, and color applications under supervision. Interns often help with scheduling appointments and greeting clients, which provides valuable exposure to salon operations and customer service. This hands-on experience is designed to build your technical skills and confidence in a supportive, fast-paced salon environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hairstylist intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hairstylist Intern, you need foundational knowledge of hair cutting, coloring, and styling techniques, usually gained through cosmetology school or a similar training program. Familiarity with salon tools such as shears, blow dryers, color applicators, and basic salon management software is crucial. Strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn from experienced stylists will help you stand out. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering quality service, building client trust, and progressing in a competitive salon environment.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
