How much do hair extension jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average hourly pay for hair extension in Iowa is $15.92, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.56 and $17.60 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are hair extensions?

Hair extensions are hairpieces made from either synthetic or human hair that are added to a person's natural hair to increase length, volume, or add highlights. They can be attached using various methods, including clip-ins, tape-ins, sew-ins, or fusion. Hair extensions are popular for those looking to achieve a different hairstyle without waiting for their natural hair to grow. Proper installation and care are essential to maintain the health of both the extensions and natural hair.

What are jobs that work with hair extensions?

As a stylist, cosmetologist, or extensionist, you use different types of hair extension techniques, such as sew-in weaves, to help customers achieve their desired appearance. Hair extension is an easy way to add length and volume to shorter hair, create beautiful styles for special occasions, help people who are suffering from hair loss, and satisfy those who are just looking for a change. In this role, your duties and responsibilities include helping clients select extensions that are appropriate for their goals, installing the extensions using glue or other methods, cutting and styling the extensions so they blend with the customer’s natural hair, and handling removals when your client’s hair grows out.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a hair extension specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hair Extension Specialist, you need expertise in hair extension techniques, color matching, and hair care, often supported by a cosmetology license or relevant certification. Familiarity with various hair extension systems (such as tape-in, sew-in, and fusion) and use of professional tools like application pliers and removal solvents is essential. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and customer service skills help build trust and ensure client satisfaction. These skills are vital for delivering safe, high-quality results that enhance client confidence and foster repeat business.

What are some common challenges faced by hair extension specialists and how can they be managed?

Hair extension specialists often encounter challenges such as matching extensions to clients’ natural hair color and texture, ensuring secure and long-lasting attachment, and maintaining the health of the client’s natural hair. Effective communication with clients about their lifestyle and aftercare routines is essential to minimize issues like matting or breakage. Staying updated on the latest techniques and products, as well as working closely with other salon professionals, helps specialists provide the best results and client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Hair Extension vs Hair Stylist?

AspectHair ExtensionHair Stylist
Required CredentialsTraining in extension application, certifications varyCosmetology license, training in cutting, coloring, styling
Work EnvironmentSalons, beauty events, freelance settingsSalons, spas, salons, freelance
Industry UsageSpecialized service within hair industryBroader role including cutting, coloring, styling
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for specialization in hair enhancementsGeneral hair care and styling

Hair extensions are specialized services performed by trained professionals to add length or volume, often requiring specific certifications. Hair stylists have a broader skill set, including cutting, coloring, and styling hair. While both work in salons and serve clients' hair needs, hair extensions focus on enhancement techniques, whereas hair stylists provide comprehensive hair care and styling services.

Do you need a license for hair extensions?

In many regions, hair extension specialists are required to hold a cosmetology license, which involves completing training and passing a licensing exam. Licensing requirements vary by location, so it is important to check local regulations to ensure compliance before offering hair extension services.

What qualifications do I need to do hair extensions?

To work as a hair extension specialist, you typically need a cosmetology license or certification in hair styling, which involves completing a state-approved training program. Skills in hair cutting, coloring, and extension application techniques are essential, and some employers may require experience or specialized training in extension methods such as tape-in, sew-in, or keratin bonds.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
