What is a Hadoop developer?

Hadoop Developers are IT professionals who specialize in using Apache Hadoop, an open-source framework for distributed storage and processing of large data sets. They design, develop, and maintain applications that leverage Hadoop technologies such as HDFS, MapReduce, Hive, Pig, and Spark to process big data efficiently. Hadoop Developers are responsible for writing scalable code, optimizing data workflows, managing clusters, and ensuring data security. Their work helps organizations analyze vast amounts of data to gain valuable insights and make informed decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by Hadoop developers when working with big data projects?

Hadoop Developers often encounter challenges such as managing the complexity of distributed systems, optimizing MapReduce jobs for performance, and ensuring data security across large clusters. Troubleshooting issues related to data consistency and job failures can require a deep understanding of both Hadoop internals and the data being processed. Additionally, integrating Hadoop with other big data tools and adapting to rapidly evolving technologies are common aspects of the role, making continuous learning essential.

What is the difference between Hadoop Developer vs Data Engineer?

AspectHadoop DeveloperData Engineer
Required SkillsHadoop ecosystem, Java, SQL, MapReduceData pipelines, ETL, cloud platforms, scripting
Work EnvironmentBig data projects, data processing teamsData infrastructure, data architecture teams
CertificationsCloudera, Hortonworks certificationsGoogle Cloud, AWS certifications
Industry UsageData processing, analytics companiesTech, finance, healthcare, any data-driven industry

Hadoop Developers focus on building and maintaining Hadoop-based data processing solutions, primarily working with the Hadoop ecosystem. Data Engineers have a broader role, designing and managing data pipelines and infrastructure across various platforms. While both roles require knowledge of big data tools, Data Engineers often work on larger data architecture projects, making their scope wider than Hadoop Developers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hadoop developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hadoop Developer, you need strong programming skills in Java, Python, or Scala, a solid understanding of distributed computing, and a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Hadoop ecosystem tools like HDFS, MapReduce, Hive, Pig, and experience with data processing frameworks such as Spark are typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are vital for efficiently managing and processing large-scale data, ensuring robust big data solutions, and collaborating within diverse technical teams.

Seniority Level:

Mid-Senior level

Job Description:

At Cloudera, we empower people to transform complex data into clear and actionable insights. With as much data under management as the hyperscalers, we're the preferred data partner for the top companies in almost every industry. Powered by the relentless innovation of the open source community, Cloudera advances digital transformation for the world's largest enterprises.

As the world generates even more volumes of data, from any device or thing, companies are discovering the need to gain immediate insights from their data by studying recurring trends and patterns over time, and staying competitive by implementing predictive actions for their business that will yield positive outcomes.

Cloudera's CDP Platform enables customers to harness those volumes of increasingly valuable data by securely hosting data lakes and efficiently managing data analytics & computing workloads between public clouds and private cloud solutions in data centers.

As a Cloudera Solutions Engineer, you will drive the technical pre-sales motion in close partnership with Account Executives to win deals and build lasting customer relationships. Working alongside sales teams, you will partner directly with prospective customers to run deep discovery and unpack their business drivers, pain points, and technical goals. You will leverage your solution design skills to demonstrate how the CDP platform solves their challenges, delivering tailored solution designs, impactful demos, and proof-of-concepts that showcase the measurable value of Cloudera's solutions.

As the Solutions Engineer you will:

  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor throughout the pre-sales lifecycle, leading technical discovery, custom solution design, and interactive demos to translate customer pain points into high-value business outcomes.

  • Create and deliver customer-centric solution designs, proposed architectures and business outcomes to all levels - developers, architects, CTO, and CIO

  • Advise customers on use case patterns through discovery and requirements workshops

  • Work with teammates and management to define technical selling strategy

  • Work with cross-functional teams including Sales, Marketing, Product Management, Services, Support, Training, and Engineering to share Cloudera's Vision with customers

  • Transform customer feedback into actionable product roadmap items

  • Champion and drive adoption of key open-source data ecosystems, including Spark, Iceberg, Open Data Lakehouse architectures, AI, and streaming platforms (NiFi, Kafka, Flink).

  • Participate within the Cloudera community, share evangelism activities (blogs, meetups, industry events), and contribute to internal and external knowledge repositories

We're excited about you if you have: (Minimum Qualifications):

  • 5+ years of professional work experience in a pre-sales customer facing role (Solutions Engineer, Sales Engineer, technical consultant, Solutions Architecture or similar position) acting as a co-seller selling solutions to business leaders and technical champions in the enterprise.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting technical discovery, whiteboarding proposed solutions, running demos, and building technical proof of concepts to drive clear business outcomes.

  • You have experience with public cloud infrastructures (AWS, Azure, GCP, IBM Cloud, etc.) You have an interest in achieving your public cloud certification.

  • You have experience with the Apache Hadoop ecosystem (HDFS, YARN) and related components (Spark, Hive, Impala, Kudu, Solr, etc.) and can talk to the benefits of a centralized architecture for both data management and data access

  • You have some experience of the formation of Data Lakes, principles of Data Warehousing, SQL and relational database patterns, and application integration

  • You may have experience with Data Flow, Queues and Stream Processing (Nifi, Kafka, Flink, Spark) in enterprise applications

  • You have some basic software development experience in Java, Scala or Python

  • You have some knowledge of differentiators across the competitive landscape

  • You have an interest in Data Science and understand the difference between Data Engineering and Applied Science

  • You have demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills.

  • You care about your colleagues, and you will get the job done together. You are passionate about what you do and inspire people around you

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in a Technical Field

You may also have: (Preferred Qualifications):

  • You have experience with the Linux OS and bare metal, VM, and distributed container platforms Kubernetes or OpenShift. You may have some experience with specific private cloud infrastructures (Server Hardware, Storage, Networking).

  • You understand the challenges in operations and integration of enterprise platforms for Security and Data Governance in the enterprise

  • Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) experience - Teradata, Netezza, GreenPlum, Exadata.

  • NoSQL or Operational-DB experience (HBase, Phoenix, Accumlo, Druid, Cassandra, MongoDB, etc.) Maybe you can even debate one option over another?

  • Integration Products experience (Talend, DataStage, Informatica BDM, Qlik, Tableau, Zoomdata, Tibco, MuleSoft, IBM, Oracle, Spring Integration, etc.)
