What is a Haas CNC operator?

Haas CNC Operators are skilled professionals who operate and maintain computer numerical control (CNC) machines manufactured by Haas Automation. They are responsible for setting up the machines, loading materials, running production cycles, and ensuring that the finished parts meet precise specifications. Haas CNC Operators also perform routine maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and monitor the machining process for quality and efficiency. Their work is essential in manufacturing industries that require high-precision metal or plastic parts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Haas CNC operator?

To thrive as a Haas CNC Operator, you need a solid understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, and experience with CNC programming, often supported by a technical diploma or relevant certification. Familiarity with Haas CNC controls, G-code programming, and precision measuring tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring production accuracy, machine efficiency, and safe operations in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges Haas CNC operators face when working with new or complex parts?

Haas CNC Operators often encounter challenges when programming or setting up machines for new or complex parts, such as interpreting detailed blueprints, selecting appropriate tooling, and ensuring precise fixturing. Adjusting for tight tolerances and troubleshooting unexpected issues during the first run can also be demanding. Collaborating closely with engineers and quality control teams is essential to resolve these challenges efficiently, ensuring that parts meet specifications without unnecessary downtime.

What is the difference between Haas Cnc Operator vs Machinist?

AspectHaas Cnc OperatorMachinist

Haas Cnc Operators primarily focus on operating Haas CNC machines, following specific programs and setups. Machinists have a broader role, including designing, setting up, and maintaining various machine tools. While both roles require technical skills and certifications, Haas Cnc Operators typically work in environments dedicated to CNC machining, whereas Machinists may work with a wider range of equipment and tasks.

Is Haas CNC good for beginners?

Haas CNC machines are often suitable for beginners due to their user-friendly interfaces and comprehensive training resources. However, operating a Haas CNC requires basic knowledge of machining principles, programming, and safety procedures, so some prior training or education is recommended for new users.

Where do Haas CNC operators make the most money?

Haas CNC operators tend to earn higher wages in regions with a strong manufacturing industry and high demand for precision machining, such as areas with advanced aerospace, automotive, or industrial sectors. Salaries are also influenced by experience, certifications, and the complexity of the machinery operated, with some locations offering premium pay for skilled operators working overtime or on specialized equipment.

Job description

Lead a Haas CNC Cell in Sun Valley

Through Express Employment Professionals (North Hollywood), our Sun Valley client is seeking a senior-level CNC machinist to own and run a three-machine cell of Haas CNC lathes and/or a small cell of Haas CNC mills. You’ll juggle multiple machines, ensure smooth handoffs to operators, and jump in to solve technical challenges across setups and production.

What your day looks like

You arrive, review the day’s drawings and specs, lay out work, and kick off first-article runs. While one part is proving out, you’re preparing the next setup, designing a quick fixture, and coordinating with fellow machinists to keep the cell moving. You’ll use your shop math, GD&T fluency, and full G-code knowledge to make sure parts are practical to produce—economically and repeatably.

Key responsibilities
  • Set up and operate a variety of CNC equipment for first and subsequent operations.
  • Lead and run Haas CNC lathes and mills, including multi-axis machines, in a low-volume/high-mix environment.
  • Create and refine your own setups; perform rapid changeovers to meet demand.
  • Design and fabricate tools and fixtures to support manufacturing of components and assemblies.
  • Interpret verbal instructions, engineering drawings, and specifications.
  • Apply strong independent judgment, shop mathematics, and sound machining practices.
  • Lay out work based on part knowledge and engineering principles; design for manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with machinists and operators to hand off machines and troubleshoot issues.
Qualifications
  • Hands-on setup and operation of Haas CNC lathes and mills.
  • Experience with sub-spindle, live tooling, and bar feeders.
  • Full G-code proficiency; solid grasp of basic shop math.
  • Comfortable handling both delicate small parts and larger/heavier stock.
  • Proficient with micrometers, calipers, and related inspection tools.
  • Team-oriented, detail-focused, and able to follow direction or work independently.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and drive continuous improvement.
  • Prior Haas experience preferred.
Physical requirements
  • Move moderate weight (50+ lbs.) via bending, stooping, or reaching on a daily basis.
  • Sit or stand for 8+ hours; walk, bend, and stretch consistent with a typical trades role.
Proficiencies
  • GD&T
  • CNC Tooling
  • Troubleshooting Skills
  • G-Code
  • CNC Machine Setup & Changeover
