As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for hgv driver class 1 in the United States is $37.80, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $41.35 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are HGV Driver Class 1?

HGV Driver Class 1 refers to a professional driver licensed to operate large goods vehicles (LGVs) with a gross vehicle weight over 7.5 tonnes and typically with an articulated trailer, also known as 'artics' or 'Class 1' lorries. These drivers are responsible for transporting goods across long distances, often between warehouses, distribution centers, and retail outlets. To become a Class 1 driver, you need to obtain a Category C+E driving license, which involves specific training and passing both theory and practical tests. Class 1 drivers play a crucial role in the logistics and supply chain industries, ensuring goods are delivered efficiently and safely.

What is the difference between Hgv Driver Class 1 vs Hgv Driver Class 2?

AspectHgv Driver Class 1Hgv Driver Class 2
LicensingRequires a Category C+E licenseRequires a Category C license
Vehicle SizeOperates larger, articulated lorriesOperates rigid lorries
Work EnvironmentLong-distance, motorway driving, and complex deliveriesLocal deliveries, shorter routes
UsageFreight across regions and countriesLocal or regional freight

Hgv Driver Class 1 drivers typically operate larger, articulated vehicles and require a Category C+E license, making them suitable for long-distance and complex freight routes. In contrast, Hgv Driver Class 2 drivers operate smaller rigid lorries with a Category C license, often focusing on local deliveries. Both roles are essential in the logistics industry but differ mainly in vehicle size, licensing, and work scope.

Is there a demand for HGV Class 1 drivers?

HGV Class 1 drivers are in high demand due to ongoing logistics and freight needs across various industries. The role often requires a valid driver’s license, CPC certification, and the ability to operate large vehicles, with employment opportunities available in transportation, distribution, and supply chain sectors.

Is it hard to get your first HGV job?

Securing a first HGV Driver Class 1 position can be challenging due to industry requirements such as a valid driver CPC and digital tachograph card, as well as gaining experience with vehicle handling and safety regulations. Employers often prefer candidates with some training or experience, but completing a recognized training course and obtaining the necessary licenses can improve job prospects.

What trucking company in Texas is paying $14000 a week?

HGV Driver Class 1 positions can offer high weekly earnings, especially for experienced drivers with specialized skills such as long-haul routes, safety records, and proper certifications. However, earning $14,000 a week is uncommon and typically associated with owner-operator arrangements or highly specialized freight, not standard employment. Most drivers earn significantly less, and such high pay may involve additional incentives or bonuses.

What are some common challenges HGV Driver Class 1 professionals face, and how can they be addressed?

HGV Driver Class 1 professionals often face challenges such as long hours on the road, tight delivery schedules, and variable traffic conditions. These can lead to fatigue and stress, but maintaining a healthy work-life balance, planning routes efficiently, and utilizing mandatory rest periods help mitigate these issues. Many transport companies also offer support through driver well-being programs and flexible shift patterns. Staying updated with industry regulations and fostering good communication with logistics coordinators can further ease daily challenges and enhance job satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an HGV Driver Class 1, and why are they important?

To thrive as an HGV Driver Class 1, you need a valid Category C+E (Class 1) licence, good driving record, and thorough knowledge of road safety regulations. Familiarity with tachographs, vehicle telematics, and digital compliance systems is typically required. Excellent time management, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help drivers manage routes, schedules, and interact with clients or depots. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, efficient deliveries and compliance with legal and company standards in logistics.

What is the highest paid HGV driver job?

The highest paid HGV driver roles are typically long-haul or specialized drivers, such as those transporting hazardous materials or oversized loads, often earning higher wages due to the increased skill and responsibility required. Experienced drivers with advanced certifications and those working for large logistics companies or in remote areas tend to earn the most. Salary can also vary based on the country, employer, and level of experience.
