Job Description:

Job Summary

Responsible for performing laboratory cytology procedures under supervision to detect malignant and premalignant conditions. Screens cytology slides with accuracy, meets competency and proficiency standards, and maintains error rates within established thresholds. Utilizes computer systems to record procedures and enter interpretations, and documents information neatly and legibly. Adapts to high-pressure situations, prioritizes tasks during emergencies, and stays current with new procedures and policies. Assists with projects and duties as assigned to support laboratory operations and patient care.


Essential Functions

Performs primary microscopic evaluation and screening of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens, marking and interpreting findings for cytopathologist review.

Assists with and performs immediate adequacy evaluations for fine needle aspiration and core biopsy procedures, both in-person and via telecytology.

Accurately documents all specimens and result data in EHR and laboratory systems, ensuring compliance with quality and regulatory standards.

Follows up on abnormal cytology results and participates in mandated quality assurance activities, including rescreens and retrospective reviews.

Engages in technical processing, preparation, staining, and cover-slipping of cytological specimens, including advanced procedures such as cell block preparations.

Communicates effectively with pathologists, clinicians, laboratory staff, and customers to ensure timely information exchange and optimal patient care.

Maintains inventory, orders supplies, and ensures a clean, safe, and compliant work environment in accordance with laboratory policies and safety guidelines.

Provides instruction, supervision, and technical consultation to students, residents, fellows, and cytology processing technicians.

Maintains required certifications, participates in continuing education, and stays current on laboratory procedures, billing practices, and regulatory requirements.

Performs other duties as assigned.


Education Requirement

Bachelor's degree in cytotechnology, biology, or a related field

Master's degree in cytotechnology is preferred


Experience Requirement

2-3 years of experience as a cytotechnologist, or a relevant area


An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

All experience must be paid and in the same related field.

Part-time and PRN experience will be prorated based on hours worked per week.

Volunteer work and internships for academic credit are not counted.
