How much do guided wave jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for guided wave in the United States is $57,195.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $37,000.00 and $62,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a guided wave?

Guided Wave jobs typically refer to roles involved in the testing, inspection, and maintenance of pipelines or structures using guided wave technology. Guided wave testing is a form of non-destructive testing (NDT) that uses ultrasonic waves to detect corrosion, cracks, or other defects over long distances without needing direct access to the entire length of the structure. Professionals in these roles may be responsible for setting up testing equipment, analyzing data, and reporting on the integrity of pipelines or other assets. They often work in industries such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, and power generation. Training and certification in NDT methods, including guided wave testing, are usually required.

What are some typical challenges faced by guided wave technicians when working in industrial environments?

Guided Wave technicians often encounter challenges such as working in hazardous or hard-to-reach locations, managing equipment calibration, and interpreting complex data from ultrasonic inspections. They must ensure safety protocols are strictly followed while performing non-destructive testing on pipelines or structures, sometimes under tight deadlines. Effective communication with engineers and maintenance teams is also crucial to ensure accurate reporting and coordination of inspection schedules.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a guided wave technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Guided Wave Technician, you generally need a background in nondestructive testing (NDT), mechanical aptitude, and relevant certifications such as ASNT Level II or III in Guided Wave Testing. Familiarity with guided wave inspection equipment, data analysis software, and safety compliance systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for accurately detecting pipeline defects, ensuring safety, and maintaining infrastructure integrity.

What is the difference between Guided Wave vs NDT Technician?

AspectGuided WaveNDT Technician
CertificationsASNT Level I/II, AWS certificationsASNT Level I/II, AWS certifications
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, pipelines, offshore facilitiesIndustrial, construction sites, manufacturing plants
Industry UsagePipeline inspection, corrosion monitoringMaterial testing, weld inspection, flaw detection

Guided Wave specialists focus on using ultrasonic guided waves for inspecting pipelines and structures, often requiring specific ultrasonic and NDT certifications. NDT Technicians perform various non-destructive testing methods across industries, including ultrasonic testing, radiography, and magnetic particle testing. While both roles require similar certifications and work environments, Guided Wave technicians specialize in ultrasonic guided wave techniques for large-scale inspections, whereas NDT Technicians have broader testing responsibilities.

Rochester Sensors, an Amphenol Company, develops sensors in many different industries including industrial, heavy vehicle, power generation and storage. Rochester is increasing its range of sensor know-how and in-house technologies to create engineered solutions for its customers. We are a multi-national company headquartered in Dallas, Texas, with manufacturing facilities in Coppell, Texas USA; Mexico City, Mexico; Brussels, Belgium; Warwick, United Kingdom, Shannon, Ireland and Shanghai, China.

Rochester builds Quality, Accuracy, and Reliability into all of our products. New designs and technologies are being introduced to further enhance your satisfaction with our products.

All of our products are constructed of quality materials to ensure durability and longevity. Rochester products are sold to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) & distributors in the following markets:

Agricultural • Aircraft • Automotive • Refrigeration • Industrial • LP Gas Marine • Heavy Truck • Off -Road • Construction • Locomotive

Petrochemicals • Process Equipment

MUST BE LOCATED IN THE DFW AREA. THIS IS NOT A REMOTE POSITION.

SENIOR ELECTRICAL DESIGN ENGINEER

OVERVIEW

We are seeking an exceptional Senior / Principal Electrical Engineer to architect and develop next -generation liquid level sensing systems for the world’s most demanding heavy vehicle and off-road environments. This role is intended for a deep technical expert—an engineer who has previously designed sensors from first principles and taken them to production. You will be responsible for the development of advanced sensing technologies including Guided Wave Radar (GWR), Capacitive sensing, and Ultrasonic sensing. These sensors must operate reliably in extreme mechanical and environmental conditions, including severe vibration, wide temperature ranges, contamination, and harsh industrial duty cycles. The position requires a hands-on engineer who can own the sensing architecture from physics through production, including electronics, signal processing, environmental robustness, and system integration. Products developed in Dallas will be deployed globally across construction, agriculture, mining, commercial vehicle, and industrial markets.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and develop high-performance liquid level sensing systems from concept through production.
  • Own the end-to-end sensor architecture, including: sensing physics, analog front-end design, signal conditioning, embedded signal processing, system integration.
  • Drive sensor performance in challenging environments with strict accuracy, reliability, and durability requirements.
  • Develop electronics capable of operating in: extreme temperatures ( –40°C to +125°C+), high vibration and mechanical shock, electrical noise and EMI, and chemical and environmental contamination.
  • Design responsibilities include: high-performance analog and mixed-signal circuitry, sensor interface electronics, power management, EMI/EMC-robust designs, and embedded microcontroller systems.
  • Serve as a technical authority in sensing technologies.
  • Drive innovation in measurement techniques, signal processing, and sensor robustness.
  • Perform deep root cause analysis and solve complex sensing challenges.
  • Lead development from initial concept through production launch.
  • Drive engineering rigor including: system architecture, detailed design, prototype development, validation testing, and production readiness.
  • Work within automotive-grade product development frameworks including: APQP, DFMEA / PFMEA, DV / PV validation, and design reviews and reliability testing
  • Support quality systems aligned with IATF 16949.
  • Work with global OEMs and system integrators.
  • Support integration of sensors into heavy equipment and vehicle platforms worldwide.
  • Participate in field validation and performance optimization.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (advanced degree preferred).
  • 10–15+ years of engineering experience in sensor design or instrumentation.
  • Proven experience developing commercial sensor products from concept to production.
  • Deep expertise in analog and mixed-signal circuit design.
  • Strong experience in one or more of the following: Radar sensing (preferably guided wave radar), Capacitive sensing systems, Ultrasonic sensing systems.
  • Industrial or automotive instrumentation.
  • Proficient hand soldering and prototyping PCB assembly.
  • Experience designing electronics for extreme environments, including: wide temperature ranges, high vibration and mechanical shock, and harsh industrial conditions.
  • Experience working within automotive-grade product development processes, including: IATF 16949, APQP, DFMEA / PFMEA, and environmental validation testing.
  • Deep technical engineer, not just a project manager.
  • Comfortable working from sensor physics through electronics and firmware.
  • Able to solve complex sensing problems in difficult environments.
  • Driven to develop highly reliable products that work in the real world.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

  • Development of liquid level sensing systems.
  • Experience with heavy vehicle, construction equipment, or agricultural machinery.
  • Embedded firmware development (C/C++).
  • Automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN).
