What are some common challenges guard pilots face during deployments, and how can they prepare for them?

Guard Pilots often encounter unique challenges during deployments, such as rapidly changing mission requirements, operating in unfamiliar or austere environments, and balancing civilian and military commitments. Preparing for these challenges involves maintaining a high level of proficiency through regular training, staying adaptable to new technologies and mission types, and fostering strong communication with both military teams and civilian employers. Building resilience and support networks within the unit also helps Guard Pilots manage the demands of deployment effectively.

How to become a guard pilot?

What is a guard pilot?

Guard Pilots are military aviators who serve in the Air National Guard or Army National Guard. Their primary duties include piloting aircraft for both state and federal missions, such as disaster response, homeland security, and combat operations. Guard Pilots may fly various types of aircraft, including fighters, cargo planes, and helicopters, depending on their unit and assignment. They balance military responsibilities with civilian life, often serving part-time while maintaining a civilian career. Training and qualifications are similar to those of active duty military pilots.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a guard pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Guard Pilot, you need a commercial or military pilot's license, strong aviation knowledge, and a thorough understanding of flight safety protocols. Familiarity with advanced avionics, navigation systems, and mission-specific equipment is typically required, along with completion of specialized military training and certifications. Exceptional decision-making, situational awareness, and teamwork skills are vital for handling high-pressure situations and coordinating with ground and air personnel. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring mission success and maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational effectiveness.

Job description

Job Title: LaaS Technical Project Manager
Hourly/Salary Compensation Range: TBD
Contract Length: 8-week initial pilot
Location: Remote supporting sites on PST
Hours: Full-time, approximately 40 hours/week. Flexibility required to support network maintenance windows and potential off-hours deployment activities.
Start Date: Targeting September 14, 2026
Client Overview:
Providence Health is launching an enterprise Network Lifecycle as a Service (LaaS) initiative to modernize its wired and wireless network infrastructure and establish a repeatable lifecycle refresh model across the organization.
The initial 8-week pilot will support three Providence locations across Oregon and Washington, with the broader program intended to scale across approximately 90-100 sites.
Medasource is especially focused on connecting military veterans and military spouses with opportunities on this initiative. Candidates with military experience are encouraged to highlight transferable experience in technical operations, communications, networking, logistics, project coordination, and team leadership.
Job Description:
The LaaS Technical Project Manager will serve as the primary day-to-day operational coordinator for Providence Health's three-site Network Lifecycle pilot.
This individual will coordinate two field deployment crews responsible for LAN switch and wireless access point replacement activities while working closely with Providence stakeholders, Medasource project leadership, Metagyre, CTFS, and technical field resources.
The TPM will own scheduling, maintenance window coordination, logistics, inventory tracking, reporting, communications, resource coordination, and overall deployment progression across the pilot.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Coordinate project execution across three Providence pilot locations
  • Manage deployment schedules, maintenance windows, site access, and sequencing
  • Coordinate two simultaneous technical field deployment crews
  • Manage deployment logistics, resource schedules, and equipment/inventory tracking
  • Maintain project status reporting, milestones, risks, issues, and dependencies
  • Facilitate communication between client stakeholders, project leadership, engineers, and third-party partners
  • Support site readiness and infrastructure inventory validation
  • Track LAN switch and wireless access point deployment progress
  • Coordinate project meetings and deployment-readiness discussions
  • Identify and escalate project risks, blockers, and scheduling conflicts
  • Support network validation, operational acceptance, and project closeout
  • Capture lessons learned and help refine the deployment model for future enterprise rollout

Skill Set Requirements:
  • Technical Project Management experience within network infrastructure, IT infrastructure, telecommunications, or similar technical environments
  • Experience coordinating network refreshes, infrastructure deployments, migrations, or comparable field-based technical projects
  • Experience managing multiple locations, workstreams, or technical teams simultaneously
  • Strong scheduling, logistics, and resource-coordination skills
  • Experience coordinating technical maintenance windows and/or cutover activities
  • Strong project reporting, documentation, inventory tracking, and organizational skills
  • Ability to identify and manage project risks, dependencies, issues, and escalations
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfortable working directly with Network Engineers and field technicians
  • Ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment
  • Ability to travel between Providence pilot locations as project needs require
  • Flexibility to support off-hours activities associated with network maintenance windows

Nice to Haves:
  • Healthcare or hospital IT experience
  • Enterprise network lifecycle or infrastructure-refresh experience
  • LAN/WLAN deployment experience
  • Cisco network infrastructure familiarity
  • Experience coordinating switch migrations, cutovers, and wireless access point deployments
  • Experience managing distributed field engineering teams
  • Providence Health experience
  • PMP, CAPM, ITIL, or comparable project/program management certification
  • Military experience in communications, networking, IT, cyber, technical operations, logistics, or project/program coordination
  • Military leadership experience involving coordination of personnel, equipment, schedules, technical operations, or field deployments

Military Veteran & Military Spouse Initiative:
A key objective of this engagement is creating meaningful opportunities for qualified military veterans and military spouses within Providence's technology organization.
Veterans, transitioning service members, National Guard/Reserve members, and military spouses with relevant experience are strongly encouraged to apply. Military experience will be evaluated based on transferable technical, operational, project-management, logistics, and leadership skills rather than civilian job titles alone.
Education/Certification(s)/License(s):
  • Bachelor's degree preferred but not required with equivalent relevant professional or military experience
  • PMP, CAPM, ITIL, or similar project management certification preferred
  • Networking or infrastructure certifications are a plus
  • Relevant military technical training and leadership experience may be considered alongside traditional education and certifications
