What is a green?

In the context of a job, 'greens' typically refers to workers who maintain and care for the grass, plants, and landscaping on golf courses, sports fields, or parks. These professionals are responsible for mowing, watering, fertilizing, and ensuring the health and appearance of the turf and surrounding greenery. Greenskeepers often operate specialized equipment, monitor soil conditions, and may also assist in setting up the course for play or events. Their work is essential for providing safe, visually appealing, and playable outdoor spaces.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a greenskeeper?

To thrive as a Greenskeeper, you need knowledge of turf management, landscaping techniques, and equipment operation, often supported by a relevant certificate or on-the-job training. Experience with irrigation systems, fertilizers, mowing machinery, and possibly certifications from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) is valuable. Attention to detail, reliability, and strong problem-solving skills help address daily challenges and maintain course standards. These skills ensure the golf course remains safe, visually appealing, and in top playing condition for users.

What challenges do greenskeepers face and how can they be addressed?

Greenskeepers often encounter challenges such as maintaining turf health during extreme weather, dealing with pest infestations, and ensuring playing surfaces remain safe and consistent for golfers. To address these issues, greenskeepers work closely with their team to monitor soil conditions, apply appropriate treatments, and adjust maintenance schedules as needed. Regular communication with golf course management and continuous training in the latest turf management techniques help greenskeepers stay ahead of potential problems and maintain high-quality course standards.

Job description

Greens 1st Assistant – Roosevelt City, Utah

$19.66 – $22.13 per hour DOE

Roosevelt City is seeking a full-time Greens 1st Assistant to help maintain and enhance one of our community's most valued recreational assets. Join a workplace rooted in service, integrity, progress, and community pride-while spending your days outdoors helping create an exceptional golf experience.

Grow Your Career with Roosevelt City

Roosevelt City is a thriving Uintah Basin community where employees take pride in improving residents' quality of life. As a Greens 1st Assistant, you'll join the Golf Course Maintenance team and work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to keep the course beautiful, healthy, and ready for play. The Greens 1st Assistant is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on work, teamwork, leadership, and seeing the results of a job well done. You'll also have opportunities to develop your skills while contributing to a course enjoyed by residents and visitors year-round.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like?

As a Greens 1st Assistant, no two days are exactly alike. Irrigation is Priority #1, so the Greens 1st Assistant will help operate, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair the irrigation system. You'll conduct morning assignments, supervise and mentor crew members, monitor course conditions, and help plan daily and weekly maintenance.

The Greens 1st Assistant will also apply fertilizers and pesticides, maintain compliance records, calibrate sprayers, and operate mowers, tractors, utility carts, spreaders, and other equipment. You'll support agronomic planning and work with the Superintendent to ensure greens, tees, fairways, and other playing areas meet the standards expected of a premier golf facility.

Your Schedule

The Greens 1st Assistant works a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays, sharing coverage with the Superintendent and crew.

What You'll Bring

A successful Greens 1st Assistant understands turfgrass maintenance, irrigation, and the equipment used in golf course operations. A turf degree is recommended but not required, and 1–2 years of golf course maintenance experience is preferred. Experience operating and repairing irrigation systems is strongly preferred.

The Greens 1st Assistant must have a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a pesticide applicator license. We're looking for someone dependable and safety-minded who communicates well, can lead and train others, and is comfortable performing physical outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

Ready to Get on Course?

If you're ready to put your skills to work as our next Greens 1st Assistant, we'd love to hear from you. Apply today through our quick 3-minute application process, answer a few questions, and take the next step toward joining Roosevelt City as a Greens 1st Assistant!
