What is a grease trap?

A Grease Trap job involves the cleaning, maintenance, and servicing of grease traps, which are devices designed to intercept fats, oils, and grease (FOG) from wastewater. Workers in this role remove accumulated grease, inspect the trap for blockages, and ensure compliance with health and environmental regulations. This job is essential in restaurants, commercial kitchens, and industrial facilities to prevent plumbing issues and keep drainage systems functioning properly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the grease trap position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Grease Trap Technician role, you need basic plumbing knowledge, mechanical aptitude, and familiarity with sanitation standards, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience with vacuum trucks, jetting equipment, and occasionally a commercial driver's license (CDL) may be required for operating specialized machinery. Strong attention to detail, good communication, and the ability to work independently are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, thorough, and compliant maintenance of grease trap systems for clients across food service and commercial facilities.

What are the typical work conditions and team dynamics for a grease trap technician?

Grease Trap Technicians often work in commercial kitchens, restaurants, and industrial settings, both indoors and outdoors, and may encounter confined spaces and strong odors as part of their daily tasks. Most positions involve working independently or in small teams, coordinating closely with kitchen staff and facility managers to schedule cleanings and ensure minimal disruption to operations. The job usually follows regular business hours, but after-hours or emergency work can sometimes be required depending on client needs. Team members support each other in adhering to safety standards and efficiently managing job sites, making reliability and strong teamwork especially important in this field.

Do you need a license to clean grease traps?

In many regions, grease trap cleaning professionals are required to hold a valid license or certification, especially if handling hazardous waste or operating specialized equipment. Licensing requirements vary by state or local jurisdiction and may include environmental or health and safety certifications.
