TITLE: Newcomer Youth Summer Academy 2026 Photography Intern (2 positions)
LOCATION: In-person, Manhattan
START DATE: June 29, 2026
DURATION: June 29 - August 21, 2026
POSITION REPORTS TO: Operations Coordinator, Youth Programs
DETAILS: Part-time; W/F; varied 4-15 hours/week
SCOPE OF WORK: The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived refugee youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 135 students from ages 5 - 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and life skills classes. Community Events are held
on Wednesdays. Field Trips are held on Fridays. The Photographer will create high quality stock photos for the IRC's internal and external purposes, including newsletters, funder reports and yearbook. The Photographer will work as
needed on-site at the Academy. The Photographer will work collaboratively with the Yearbook Coordinator and Graphic Designer to ensure the Academy is well-documented and the Yearbook is a valued item of memorabilia for students and families.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Photograph Newcomer Youth Summer Academy events, classes, take student and staff portraits
• Provide communication regularly with IRC administrators, Yearbook Coordinator and Graphic Designer
• Provide images in easy to download files organized by date and event
• Edit photo rolls
• Edit photos
*To be considered, photographer must be able to commit to photographing at least 50% of the
top priority days/events, which are:
• Staff Training
• First Day of School
• In-class and around-school candid photographs
• Wednesday mid-day community events (e.g. Concert, International Food & Fashion Festival, Talent Show)
• Field trips (every Friday)
• Student & staff yearbook portraits
• Graduation (Friday)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Intern will enhance skills to document clients of diverse backgrounds and ages
2. Intern will gain hands on experience with different types of photography (portraits, class-setting, events, and action shots)
3. Intern will develop an understanding of photography ethics, especially when working with refugee and youth populations
REQUIREMENTS:
• must be based in US, must be a US citizen or have US work authorization,
• must be enrolled in post-secondary institution or have graduated from a post-secondary institution within last 2 years.
• Photographer with at least two years photographing experience
• Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
• Flexible, and able to solve problems
• High level of cultural competence
• Fluency with photo editing programs
• Experience working with diverse populations and youth desirable
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Consent to photos being the property of IRC and not for use by the photographer without IRC's permission

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
