Job description

Local News Chief Meteorologist

16WAPT, the ABC affiliate in Jackson, MS has an opening for a Chief Meteorologist. We are looking for someone who knows the science of forecasting and can tell a relatable weather story. You will be an accurate forecaster, convey appropriate tone for the situation, summarize complicated information, and be able to use the latest technology. You will also manage a team of meteorologists and will demonstrate and communicate our coverage plan to producers, anchors, reporters, video journalists, and our digital team. The Chief Meteorologist is an important part of the news management team.ย 

Responsibilities

  • Get viewers ready with accurate, compelling, and understandable weather forecasts
  • Provide immediate weather information before and during severe weather event
  • Provide content on TV, for our radio partners, and on our digital platforms
  • Use all the latest technology available to us, to tell an intriguing weather story
  • Deployed in the field during weather events
  • Summarize facts and content for broadcasts
  • Execute active live shots and tell compelling stories
  • Communicate weather presentation vision with our team of anchors, reporters, video journalists, and production staff
  • Produce and publish content to online platforms
  • Will attend weekly news manager meeting
  • Will evaluate supervised employees and guide them to success through feedback opportunities
  • Will appear at public events and community educational outreach opportunities

Requirements

  • Previous on-air experience handling breaking news and severe weather coverage
  • In-depth knowledge of weather science and forecasting
  • Dynamic on-air presence with a conversational weather presentation
  • Knowledgeable about how to interpret and translate high powered radar data
  • Proficient in using baron's and or WSI graphics and technology
  • NWA and CBM seals are a plus
  • Related military experience will be considered
