The main difference between a Graphics Design Internship and a Graphic Designer is experience level and employment status. Internships are designed for students or recent graduates gaining practical experience, often under supervision. Graphic Designers are experienced professionals working independently or within teams on various projects. Internships serve as a stepping stone into the industry, while Graphic Designers are established roles focused on delivering design solutions.

What are Graphics Design Internships?

Graphics Design Internships are short-term positions where students or recent graduates work with professional designers to gain practical experience in the field of graphic design. Interns typically assist with creating visuals for digital and print media, help develop branding materials, and learn how to use design software like Adobe Creative Suite. These internships provide valuable exposure to real-world projects, feedback from experienced designers, and the opportunity to build a professional portfolio. They can also serve as a stepping stone to full-time roles in the design industry.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a Graphics Design Internship?

As a Graphics Design Intern, you'll typically work on a variety of projects such as creating social media graphics, designing marketing materials, assisting with branding assets, and supporting ongoing campaigns. You may also collaborate with senior designers and other team members to brainstorm concepts and refine visual content. This hands-on experience helps you build a diverse portfolio and gain practical skills in design software, while learning to adapt your work to real client needs and feedback.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Graphics Design Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graphics Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of design principles, creativity, and proficiency in graphic design tools, often supported by coursework or a portfolio. Familiarity with software like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and basic knowledge of digital asset management systems are typically required. Strong communication, time management, and openness to feedback help interns stand out in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills ensure interns can contribute effectively to projects, learn quickly, and support the creative team's goals.

Job description

Do you want to make your mark on a new and exciting brand developing clean, reliable, and abundant fusion energy that will revolutionize how we power the future? We’re looking for a talented Graphic Design Intern with the skills and passion for crafting exciting and visually stunning designs. This internship offers hands-on opportunities to work on real projects while further developing your design skills in a professional environment.

About the Role

As a Graphic Design Intern, you'll work directly with our Head of External Affairs and CEO to help us think through our existing visual identify and how we present ourselves to our audiences, stress-test what’s working and what’s not, advocate for necessary and impactful design changes that push our identity forward, and develop compelling visual products across multiple platforms that better reflect our identity and scale as we grow as a business.

What You'll Do

You'll design and iterate on brand identity elements including logos, color palettes, typography systems, and visual guidelines. You'll create marketing materials such as social media graphics, presentations, print collateral, and digital assets that align with established brand standards. You'll assist in developing mood boards, design concepts, and presentations for client or stakeholder meetings. You'll also help maintain and organize our digital asset library and contribute to team brainstorming sessions and creative critiques.

What We're Looking For

You should have demonstrated experience developing branding and visual identity projects, whether through coursework, freelance work, or previous internships. Expert-level proficiency in the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of products is essential, particularly Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, and InDesign, as well as experience in generative AI tools and workflows (eg. Midjourney, Magic Studio, Firefly). Familiarity with additional Adobe tools like Premiere and After Effects is a plus. You should have a strong portfolio showcasing your branding work and visual identity projects, with a keen eye for typography, color theory, and composition. We're looking for someone who can work both independently and collaboratively, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and communicate design concepts clearly. You should be receptive to feedback and eager to learn and grow as a designer.

Logistics

  • This is a paid, part-time position with no set end date. Duration will be based on the balance of our continued business needs and your availability and goals.

  • In-office work requirement. Duties will be performed at Realta Fusion offices in Madison, WI.
