Founded in 1968, the Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by Black culture. It is a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society.
Job Summary
The Studio Museum in Harlem is seeking a Graphic Designer to support creative production and advance the institution's reputation as a 21st Century Museum dedicated to championing and incubating Black artistic vision. A key stakeholder in maintaining the Museum's brand and visual identity, the Designer will be a member of the Communications team, partnering with a second Graphic Designer and internal stakeholders to identify the needs and requirements to produce compelling, consistent, and brand-aligned assets.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • The Graphic Designer will work alongside a second Graphic Designer, under the leadership of the Director of Media and Communications, to design and develop culturally compelling and institutionally relevant creative solutions for all exhibitions, printed materials, social graphics, digital and print signage, invitations, and environmental projects.
  • Implement and expand the Museum's visual identity system, ensuring brand consistency across all audience touch points including but not limited to print, digital, social, OOH and media campaigns.
  • Work closely with the Marketing and Communications teams to conceptualize and bring cross-departmental visual narrative ideas to life across all channels.
  • Collaborate with Special Events team to develop branded assets for the Museum's premier fundraising events.
  • Support the Museum's in-house publication projects, such as the design of Studio Magazine and Artist-in-Residence exhibition publication.
  • Coordinate with external vendors to manage the production of brand materials, from conception to completion.
  • Collaboratively Manage Graphic Design Intern.
  • Maintain approved style and brand guidelines.
  • Organize, monitor, and maintain files on shared drives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Experience working within creative teams with a demonstrated ability to support the creation and communication of a vision and map clear steps towards execution.
  • Strong visual aesthetic - love for and knowledge of typography, iconography, form, color, composition, materiality, and detail
  • Strong aptitude for visual storytelling, passion for staying current on trends within the design and art world.
  • Forward thinking; passionate about bringing fresh ideas and industry knowledge of branding, design, technology, and Black culture to the Museum.
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to explain rationale and evoke excitement with your recommendations clearly and articulately.
  • Strong attention to detail with some copy-editing experience a plus
  • Comfortable working in a tight-knit, collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment that demands flexibility while maintaining quality of work.
  • In depth knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite - Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign
  • Experience working with AppSpace a plus
  • Previous experience working at a gallery or museum a plus
  • Photography and/or video production experience a plus

Education and Experience
Bachelor of Fine Arts or Master of Fine Arts in graphic design and three to four years of design and production experience
