What is a Grafana developer?

Grafana Developers are professionals who specialize in designing, developing, and maintaining dashboards and data visualizations using Grafana, an open-source analytics and monitoring platform. They work with various data sources, create custom visualizations, and help organizations gain insights from their data through interactive dashboards. Grafana Developers typically have experience with scripting, querying databases, integrating APIs, and may also develop Grafana plugins or contribute to automation and alerting solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by Grafana developers in managing large-scale dashboards?

Grafana Developers often encounter challenges related to performance optimization and data visualization when managing large-scale dashboards. As the number of panels and data sources increases, dashboards can become slower to load and harder to maintain. Developers need to implement best practices such as efficient query design, use of variables, and dashboard templating to ensure scalability and responsiveness. Collaborating closely with DevOps, backend teams, and data engineers is also essential to troubleshoot issues and implement robust monitoring solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Grafana developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Grafana Developer, you need strong skills in data visualization, time-series databases (like Prometheus or InfluxDB), and proficiency in scripting or query languages such as SQL or Grafana's own query language, often backed by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with Grafana dashboards, plugins, data source integrations, and monitoring tools, as well as experience with cloud platforms and DevOps pipelines, are highly valuable. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with teams and addressing monitoring needs. These skills ensure the creation of insightful dashboards, efficient troubleshooting, and effective communication of system health to stakeholders.

What is the difference between Grafana Developer vs Data Analyst?

AspectGrafana DeveloperData Analyst
Required skillsGrafana setup, dashboard creation, data visualization, basic scriptingData interpretation, SQL, Excel, statistical analysis
CertificationsNone specific, familiarity with data visualization toolsCertifications like Microsoft Data Analyst, Google Data Analytics
Work environmentIT teams, DevOps, monitoring dashboardsBusiness units, reporting teams, data-driven decision making
Industry usageTech, finance, operations, monitoringMarketing, finance, healthcare, business analysis

While both roles involve working with data, a Grafana Developer specializes in creating and maintaining dashboards for monitoring and visualization, often within IT and DevOps environments. A Data Analyst focuses on interpreting data to support business decisions, using a broader set of analytical tools. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and roles.

Does Grafana require coding?

Grafana developers often use scripting and query languages like SQL or PromQL to create dashboards and visualize data, but basic setup and configuration can be done without coding. Advanced customization or automation may require some programming skills, especially when integrating with APIs or developing plugins.

Is Grafana Developer fully remote?

Grafana Developer roles are often offered as fully remote positions, allowing developers to work from anywhere. However, some employers may require occasional on-site presence or have specific location preferences, so it varies by company. Skills in remote collaboration tools and self-management are typically important for such roles.

Is Grafana a good place to work?

Grafana is a company known for its open-source data visualization platform, and working there as a Grafana Developer involves collaborating on cloud-based tools, often requiring skills in JavaScript, Go, and DevOps. Employees generally report a collaborative environment with opportunities for growth in the tech industry.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a DevOps Cloud Engineer to join our dynamic team and own the cloud infrastructure, automation, and reliability behind our web portals and SaaS solutions! The ideal candidate is passionate about IoT and Home Automation products, thrives on automating everything, and has a proven track record of building and operating secure, scalable cloud platforms. This role combines infrastructure architecture, CI/CD pipeline engineering, platform reliability, and hands-on development in a cloud-first environment, leveraging AWS services.
Key Responsibilities:
Cloud Infrastructure & Architecture:
  • Design, build, and operate secure, scalable AWS infrastructure supporting web portals, SaaS platforms, and IoT device fleets.
  • Manage infrastructure as code using Terraform and AWS CloudFormation, with version-controlled, peer-reviewed changes.
  • Architect for high availability, fault tolerance, cost optimization, and disaster recovery, including backup and restore strategies.
  • Administer core AWS services such as EC2, ECS/Fargate, S3, RDS, Lambda, VPC, IAM, Route 53, and CloudFront.

CI/CD & Automation:
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for application and infrastructure deployments (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, AWS CodePipeline).
  • Drive automation of build, test, deployment, and rollback processes to enable frequent, low-risk releases.
  • Standardize containerization with Docker and orchestration with Kubernetes or ECS across environments.
  • Develop automation scripts and internal tooling in Python and Bash.

Monitoring, Reliability & Performance:
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting using AWS CloudWatch and related observability tools (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog).
  • Define and track SLOs/SLIs; lead incident response, root cause analysis, and post-incident reviews.
  • Continuously tune performance and right-size infrastructure to balance reliability and cost.

Security & Compliance:
  • Apply best practices for data security, identity and access management (IAM), secrets management, and network security in SaaS environments.
  • Automate security scanning, patching, and compliance checks within pipelines and infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with InfoSec teams to maintain a secure, auditable cloud architecture.

Collaboration & Enablement:
  • Partner with software engineers to design deployable, observable, cloud-native applications and improve developer experience.
  • Establish and enforce DevOps standards, best practices, and documentation across the engineering team.
  • Mentor developers on cloud, containerization, and automation practices, fostering a culture of shared operational ownership.
  • Write technical documents, runbooks, and operational guidelines.
  • Use project management tools (Trello) to track and communicate project status.
  • Stay current on emerging cloud and DevOps technologies and champion innovative solutions.

Requirements
What we are looking for:
Required
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven experience in a DevOps, Cloud, or Site Reliability Engineering role supporting production SaaS environments.
  • Strong expertise in AWS cloud services and architecture (EC2, S3, Fargate/ECS, RDS, Lambda, VPC, IAM).
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform and/or CloudFormation).
  • Strong understanding of Linux administration, Docker, Kubernetes, and virtualization.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and release automation.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation with Python and Bash.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases (MySQL, SQL Server), including backups, replication, and performance basics.
  • Solid grasp of networking fundamentals (DNS, load balancing, TLS, VPNs, firewalls).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.

Preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in DevOps, cloud engineering, or infrastructure roles.
  • AWS certifications (e.g., Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer).
  • Experience supporting IoT ecosystems, device fleets, or home automation products.
  • Familiarity with application stacks such as Python, PHP, NodeJS, or C#/.NET, sufficient to support and troubleshoot deployments.
  • Experience with observability platforms (Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog, ELK).
