Job description

TITLE: Butler Children's Literature Center Graduate Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Butler Center
REPORTS TO: Curator, Butler Children's Literature Center
OPEN TO: Graduate students enrolled in School of Information Studies
HOURLY RATE: $15.25
HOURS: (10-20 hours per week)
Job Description
The Butler Children's Literature Center graduate assistant attends to the everyday maintenance of the Center's needs:
  • Organizing the Butler Center's examination collection of newly published books submitted by publishers: Classifying new books into picture book, middle grade, young adult and nonfiction categories, and shelving accordingly; tracking submissions in spreadsheet.
  • Assisting the Curator with course needs and Butler Center needs, sometimes including research, printing, etc.
  • Blogging weekly on the Butler Center's website: butlerspantry.org.
  • Creating displays and signage for the Butler Center.
  • Planning/organizing assistance for the annual Butler Book Sale, and working the Sale including reader's advisory service to customers (fall semester only).
  • Participating in event planning and execution, including professional development events and annual Butler Lecture.
  • Working with permanent collections, including the Ellin Greene Storytelling Collection and the Effie Lee Morris Collection of African American Youth Literature.
  • Social media on behalf of the Center, including Facebook, X (Twitter), and Instagram.
  • Hosting Butler Center open hours, sometimes with the Curator, sometimes on own.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Current enrollment in Dominican University's School of Information Studies.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in youth services in public or school libraries.
  • Must be eligible for US employment

Necessary Skills
  • Mastery of web-based research, social media, and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of the children's and teen literature canon, and the ability to think and write critically and creatively about books.
  • Detail-oriented organization.
  • Ability to lift and move boxes and books.
  • Personable demeanor and the ability to maintain positive relationships with others.
  • Capable of taking responsibility for sole presence during open hours, and to lock up securely.
  • Strong time management skills and a self-motivated work ethic.

NOTE: The position will be mainly on campus and with infrequent remote work.
