Job Overview
The Director of Graduate Fellowships and Awards at Georgetown's University Office of Graduate Studies is responsible for the overall development, application, expansion and training in relation to external awards, including sponsored government and non-government research awards, fellowships, foundation fellowships, private grants, and other external awards to graduate students across various programs, including Biomedical Sciences at the GUMC and the Law Center. This position plays a crucial role in helping graduate students to secure external financial support to enhance their academic and research endeavors. By increasing the number and monetary value of external awards obtained at Georgetown, the Director contributes to the university's strategic goal of supporting scholarly excellence and fostering national recognition as well as to the University's financial position. This Director is also tasked with overseeing internal awards at Georgetown, through managing a faculty committee, and facilitating the review process for internal grants and awards. These include research travel grants and the other internal fellowships important to both research and the University's mission, the Healy awards.
The role includes finding and promoting funding opportunities for graduate students through advertising, newsletters, website, social media, workshops, and holding informational sessions in the various schools. The position works closely with all graduate students at Georgetown, to educate them on fellowships, including developing and running a summer, zero credit, optional training course for graduate students on obtaining grant funding. The Director will serve as the Project Director for federally funded fellowship programs and oversee the management of awards in partnership with JORA. A critical role of the Director is to develop, build and maintain relationships with a wide range of external funding organizations, government sources and program directors, and foundations.
Graduate Professionalization Program: Develop, manage, and teach an optional University-wide graduate professionalization course, The Graduate Professionalization Seminar, designed to prepare graduate students for success in academic and professional careers. The seminar will cover topics such as effective university teaching (including instructor preparation, classroom management, grading practices, and student support), research success (including conference presentations, abstract writing, publication strategies, and scholarly networking), research integrity, career planning, and professional skills. The course will be offered through the University Office of Graduate Studies as part of its graduate student enrichment portfolio. In addition, the Office will develop and maintain a customizable Canvas course, accompanying instructional materials, and faculty training resources that can be adopted and adapted by individual schools, departments, and programs across Georgetown to meet their own graduate professionalization needs.
Additional duties include, but are not limited to:
- Develop strategies to expand grant and fellowship opportunities and funding.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff and students, to enhance funding opportunities and support applications.
- Cultivate relationships with government and non-government funding agencies and foundations, and donors.
- Monitor external funding trends and recommend and implement strategies to increase competitiveness.
- Manage the "Office of Graduate Fellowships & Awards" website, newsletters, and develop and maintain an awards database and website.
- Create and teach a zero credit funding and grant-writing course.
