Job description

Job Title: Specialist, Data / Metadata Engineer

Job Code: 42901

Job Location: Clifton, NJ

Job Schedule: 9/80 employees work 9 out of 14 days- totaling 80 hours worked- and have every other Friday off

Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking a detail-oriented and systems-minded Specialist, Data / Metadata Engineer to support the development and management of data structures, metadata, and product configurations used across multiple projects. This role is focused less on traditional software coding and more on defining, organizing, and maintaining the structured data that interfaces with and drives a primary UI software application.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of how to translate system and product requirements into scalable, modular, and reusable data structures that can be applied across programs. This individual will work closely with Systems Engineers and Software Engineers to ensure metadata and configuration content are implemented consistently, support automation where possible, and enable efficient integration into the broader software framework.

This position requires someone who can think at both the detailed and system level-understanding not only the specific data definitions required for a project, but also how those definitions should be structured to promote commonality, flexibility, and long-term maintainability across multiple efforts.

The selected candidate will also support integration and verification activities to confirm that metadata, UI content, and Mission Data File (MDF) outputs align with requirements and function as intended. Experience working in Agile teams and familiarity with Jira, JSON, software configuration workflows, and Jenkins-based pipelines is beneficial.

Essential Functions:

  • Interpret system, software, and product requirements and translate them into structured metadata and data definitions
  • Develop, organize, and maintain data structures that interface with the primary UI software across multiple projects
  • Create and manage metadata in JSON format to support product functionality, UI content, and output generation
  • Design data definitions with a focus on modularity, reusability, automation, and common application across programs
  • Collaborate with Systems and Software Engineering teams to ensure data structures are consistent with product intent and implementation needs
  • Support the definition and maintenance of data catalog content used to generate Mission Data File (MDF) outputs
  • Perform integration, verification, and validation activities to confirm metadata, UI behavior, and MDF outputs meet requirements
  • Identify and resolve gaps, inconsistencies, and defects across requirements, metadata definitions, UI implementation, and generated outputs
  • Coordinate across disciplines to ensure alignment between requirements, configuration content, software interfaces, and final deliverables
  • Support Agile execution through Jira, sprint planning, backlog refinement, and status tracking
  • Interface with software configuration management and pipeline processes as needed, including Jenkins-based workflows

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field and a minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Or Graduate Degree (MS) and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience.
  • Secret Clearance required.
    • Onboarding is contingent upon clearance received/approved.
  • 4+ years' experience interpretting and applying system and software requirements to structured data or metadata solutions
  • 4+ years' experience developing or managing structured data, metadata, configuration content, or schema-like definitions
  • 4+ years' experience developing system level that are modular, scalable, reusable, and maintainable across multiple projects
  • 4+ years' experience working across cross-functional teams, especially Systems and Software Engineering
  • 4+ years' experience with integration, verification, validation, and troubleshooting
  • Understanding of UI-related configuration or data-driven workflows

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to coordinate effectively across teams
  • Experience defining data models, metadata structures, configuration frameworks, or schema-driven solutions for software applications
  • Experience supporting products or workflows where structured data drives UI behavior, output generation, or system functionality
  • Familiarity with Mission Data File generation, validation, or related data-driven outputs
  • Experience with software configuration management and CI/CD pipeline support
  • Familiarity with Jenkins-based workflows and integration with enterprise engineering tools
  • Experience in environments requiring reusable solutions across multiple product lines or customer programs
  • Exposure to C++ development environments sufficient to coordinate effectively with software teams, even if not serving in a primary coding role
