Graduate School Intern information

What is a graduate school intern?

Graduate School Interns are students who are currently enrolled in a graduate program and participate in internships to gain practical experience related to their field of study. These internships can be part-time or full-time and often provide hands-on training, networking opportunities, and exposure to real-world professional environments. Graduate School Interns apply the theoretical knowledge from their coursework to actual workplace settings, enhancing their skills and improving their employment prospects after graduation. Many graduate programs encourage or require internships as an integral part of their curriculum.

What types of projects or responsibilities can a graduate school intern expect to handle during their internship?

Graduate School Interns typically work on a variety of projects that may include assisting with research, supporting administrative tasks, organizing events, and contributing to the development of academic materials. Interns often collaborate closely with faculty, staff, and other students, which helps them develop strong communication and teamwork skills. The exact responsibilities can vary depending on the department, but most internships offer opportunities to gain hands-on experience relevant to higher education administration, research, or student services. This exposure not only builds practical skills but can also lead to networking opportunities and future career advancement within academia.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate school intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate School Intern, you generally need strong research, analytical, and organizational skills, along with current enrollment in a relevant graduate program. Familiarity with data analysis software, library databases, and productivity tools such as Microsoft Office or Google Workspace is often required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and initiative are standout soft skills for collaborating with faculty and managing multiple projects. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing effectively to academic projects, building professional networks, and gaining practical experience in your field.

What is the difference between Graduate School Intern vs Research Assistant?

AspectGraduate School InternResearch Assistant
Required CredentialsEnrolled in graduate program, some research experienceUndergraduate or graduate student, often with research coursework
Work EnvironmentAcademic institutions, research labs, internshipsUniversities, research centers, labs
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research organizations, internshipsUniversities, government agencies, private research firms

Graduate School Interns typically participate in internships within academic or research settings, focusing on gaining experience related to their field of study. Research Assistants are more involved in ongoing research projects, often working closely with faculty or senior researchers. While both roles require some research background, Interns are usually students seeking practical experience, whereas Research Assistants are more integrated into research activities. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right role aligned with your career goals.

Job description

Your impact on the world begins here. Evonik is the right place to make a difference. We are seeking innovative, self-starters to join our team. We offer you the opportunity to spend the summer at one of our sites in North America to work on meaningful and practical projects and network with professionals to apply what you are learning in school.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Evonik's Summer Professional Enrichment (SPE) Program is a 12 week internship program that provides undergraduate students an opportunity to gain real-world experience and expand their knowledge beyond their studies in university. Over the summer, interns will apply skills they've acquired through education to their technical project while also gaining experience working on a cross-functional team for a regional group project. We offer summer internship opportunities across the United States in various fields, including manufacturing/operations, and environmental health & safety. During the interview process, we will work with candidates to identify the work setting and location that best aligns with their career aspirations.

Here are some examples of technical projects our previous Evonik summer interns have worked on:

  • Process Engineering Intern: Contributed to the startup activities of a new chemical process, including updating procedures, redlining P&IDs, and creating Gantt charts to enhance process efficiency
  • Research & Development Intern: Engaged in the development of Evonik's Eudragit aqueous dispersion polymer coatings, which are used to provide a protective layer for pills, tablets, and capsules, effectively controlling the release and delivery of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs)
  • Production Engineering Intern: Reviewed and redlined technical drawings for the integration of new flow meter on a centrifuge, ensuring compliance with site engineering standards

By choosing Evonik, you will also have the opportunity to meet executives that are apart of Evonik's North American Leadership Team (NALT), learn more about Evonik's business portfolio and network with your peers through a virtual Let's Connect Series. You can even join an Employee Resource Group at Evonik to connect with like-minded individuals, enhance your professional development, and contribute to a culture of inclusion and innovation that empowers every voice! #earlycareers
