What is a Graduate Offshore Engineer job?

A Graduate Offshore Engineer is an entry-level engineering role focused on offshore projects, such as oil and gas platforms, wind farms, and marine structures. They assist senior engineers in design, analysis, and project execution while gaining hands-on experience in offshore operations. Responsibilities may include structural assessments, installation planning, and safety evaluations. The role often involves working both in an office and offshore environments, requiring a strong technical background and problem-solving skills. It serves as a pathway to becoming a specialized offshore engineer in the energy or marine industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Graduate Offshore Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Offshore Engineer, a candidate typically needs an engineering degree (usually in mechanical, civil, or marine engineering), strong analytical skills, and fundamental knowledge of offshore operations. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and offshore structural analysis tools, as well as certifications like BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training), are often required. Excellent teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are key soft skills in this position. These skills and qualifications are critical to ensuring safety, technical accuracy, and collaboration in complex offshore environments.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a Graduate Offshore Engineer, and how often will I be required to work offshore?

As a Graduate Offshore Engineer, your work schedule can vary depending on the specific project and employer, but it often consists of rotational shifts—such as two weeks offshore followed by two weeks onshore or off. This means you'll spend concentrated periods on an offshore platform, where you'll work alongside multidisciplinary teams on project delivery, inspections, maintenance, and safety checks. When not offshore, you'll typically be based in an office environment, supporting project planning, reporting, and engineering design tasks. This rotation provides valuable hands-on experience and helps build an understanding of both site operations and project management in the offshore industry.
