Chief, UCSF Division of Experimental Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital
The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Medicine at the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) seeks an inclusive leader for its Division of Experimental Medicine. The ZSFG Division of Experimental Medicine's mission is to understand the human immune system so that lifesaving therapies and vaccines can be developed to protect against chronic infectious diseases of global importance, and to establish a training environment that fosters patient-oriented research in the U.S. and abroad.
The division brings together experts working on different infectious diseases (including, but not limited to HIV, TB, malaria, and SARS-Cov-2) to work collaboratively in advancing the understanding of the immune response to these diseases, thereby promoting prevention and cure efforts worldwide. The division seeks to impact global health and save lives by improving immunity to infectious diseases and to educate and train the next generation of global leaders.
The division is comprised of 9 dedicated and highly motivated faculty members, 9 Professional Researchers, 6 Specialists, 6 Postdoctoral Scholars, 20 staff members, and 2 clinical fellows with total expenditures of approximately $1.6 million. The division is solely supported through research funding. In 2025, there were 22 active contracts and grants funded.
The division is located at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) which is an essential part of San Francisco's health care system serving some 100,000 patients each year and providing 20 percent of the city's inpatient care. ZSFG serves the community with a full complement of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, diagnostic and psychiatric services for adults and children 24 hours a day. ZSFG is owned and operated by the City and County of San Francisco, Department of Public Health and is part of a city-wide integrated health care system, providing primary, specialty and hospital care for vulnerable populations.
ZSFG and UCSF have been partners in public health since 1872, attracting physicians who are leaders in their fields and making ZSFG one of the nation's top academic medical centers, training tomorrow's providers and leaders. The research conducted at ZSFG has led to many important breakthroughs in the delivery of care to vulnerable populations, including those affected by HIV, TB, and malaria. The UCSF research programs at ZSFG are awarded approximately $160 million annually. The successful candidate will join the full-time UCSF Department of Medicine (DOM) faculty and become a member of the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program. In a collaborative and multidisciplinary manner, the selected candidate will also be expected to sustain and expand existing close links with the exceptionally strong UCSF efforts in the areas of: HIV research and care (including those led by the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine, the amfAR HIV Cure Research Institute, the DARE Collaboratory, the UCSF-GIVI Center for AIDS Research, and the AIDS Research Institute); microbiology and immunology (including those led by the world-renowned UCSF Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the broader ImmunoX and Integrative Microbiology programs); and in the various disciplines of medicine focused on important aspects of morbidities associated with and/or precipitated by the processes of chronic infection and inflammation.
The successful candidate will be expected to have an MD, PhD, or MD-PhD with a demonstrated commitment to and currently successful NIH-supported research program focused on chronic infectious agents and their interactions with the human immune system, the ability to lead and empower a diverse group and to work with research partners using a collaborative approach, demonstrated success in promoting or producing scholarship and funding, and the ability to mentor young scientists and clinicians. Successful candidates for this position must demonstrate exceptional leadership, administrative, and organizational skills in medical research and education. The applicant must have national stature in Infectious Disease and/or Immunology research.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $168,300-$358,300. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
