How much do graduate journalist jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate journalist?
To thrive as a Graduate Journalist, you need excellent writing, research, and interviewing skills, typically acquired through a journalism or communications degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), social media platforms, and digital editing tools such as Adobe Premiere or Photoshop is often expected. Curiosity, adaptability, strong time-management, and the ability to work well under tight deadlines are stand-out soft skills in this field. These competencies are essential for producing high-quality, accurate reporting and contributing effectively to a dynamic newsroom environment.
What kind of mentorship or training can a graduate journalist expect in their first role?
As a Graduate Journalist, you can typically expect to receive hands-on mentorship from experienced editors and reporters who guide you through story development, fact-checking, and refining your writing style. Many organizations offer structured onboarding or training sessions that introduce you to the publication's editorial standards, workflow, and digital tools. You'll often have opportunities to shadow senior journalists, participate in team meetings, and get regular feedback on your work. This supportive environment helps you quickly build confidence, develop your reporting skills, and contribute meaningfully to the team.
What is a graduate journalist?
A Graduate Journalist is an entry-level role in journalism, typically for recent graduates looking to gain experience in the field. Responsibilities often include researching stories, conducting interviews, writing articles, and assisting senior journalists with content production. This role is designed to develop reporting, editing, and multimedia skills while learning about newsroom operations. Graduate Journalists may work for newspapers, magazines, online publications, or broadcast media. It is a stepping stone to more senior journalism roles.
