What is graduate consulting?

Graduate consulting refers to entry-level roles in consulting firms that are specifically designed for recent university graduates. In these positions, graduates work on client projects, conducting research, analysis, and helping develop solutions to business problems under the supervision of more experienced consultants. These roles offer exposure to various industries and provide structured training and mentorship to help new consultants develop essential skills. Graduate consultants often progress to more senior roles as they gain experience. It is a common first step for those seeking a long-term career in management or strategy consulting.

What types of projects does a graduate consultant typically work on in their first year, and how is responsibility assigned?

As a graduate consultant, you’ll usually be involved in a range of projects such as market research, data analysis, process improvement, and strategy development for clients across various industries. In the first year, you can expect to support more senior consultants by conducting research, preparing presentations, and contributing to client deliverables. Responsibility is often assigned based on project needs and your developing skill set, with increasing autonomy as you gain experience. You’ll also collaborate closely with team members from different backgrounds, which provides valuable learning opportunities and exposure to diverse business challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Consultant, you generally need strong analytical abilities, problem-solving skills, and a relevant degree such as business, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Excel, PowerPoint, and sometimes specialized software such as Tableau or SQL is typical, and some firms value additional certifications like Lean Six Sigma. Exceptional communication, teamwork, and adaptability help you stand out by enabling you to build client relationships and collaborate effectively. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering actionable insights and driving client success in a dynamic consulting environment.
