ย
Please note that this is an onsite position that is eligible for a hybrid schedule (3 days required onsite/2 days remote) after the first 90 days.

What We're Looking For
ย
Agate is hiring a Software Developer II to help build and improve a mission-critical product in a fast-moving, evolving environment. This is a hands-on, mid-level role for a builder who thrives when things are imperfect: requirements evolve, priorities shift, and the team needs someone who can take ownership, make sound technical decisions, and drive work to completion.ย
ย
You'llย work across the stack - SQL is a must-have - andย you'llย also contribute to our application layers (backend services/middle tier and front-end). Youย don'tย need to have spent your whole career in .NET, but you do need meaningful experience building andย maintainingย real web applications using a backend language and database-driven systems.ย
ย
This role is ideal for aย solutions-oriented developerย who enjoys solving hard problems with limited oversight,ย valuesย pragmatic engineering and continuous improvement, and is comfortable operating in an Agile delivery model.ย
What You'll Do
  • Deliver end-to-end featuresย across the database, backend/middle tier, and front-end layers (SQL + .NET + HTML/CSS/JS).ย ย
  • Own medium-to-high complexity workย from refinement through implementation, testing support, and release.ย ย
  • Write andย maintainย SQL stored procedures, functions, and scripts, including indexing basics, query tuning, and performance-minded design.ย ย
  • Contribute toย backendย logicย inย VB.NET or C#.NETย (or bring strong transferable backend experience and ramp quickly).ย ย
  • Build and enhanceย front-end componentsย usingย HTML, CSS/Bootstrap, and JavaScript.ย ย
  • Collaborate with QA to improveย test coverageย and ensure the completeness ofย authoredย work.ย ย
  • Participate inย Agile ceremoniesย (refinement, estimation, planning) and help the team deliver predictably.ย ย
  • Performย code reviews, reinforce patterns/standards, and raise overall code qualityย
  • Support requirement clarity by partnering with Product/BA peers onย technical approaches and acceptance criteria.ย ย
  • Mentor Softwareย Developer Iย teammates through pairing, reviews, and practical guidance.
What You'll Bring
  • Professional experience building production software whereย you'veย shipped and supported real features (not just prototypes).ย
  • Strong SQL capability: stored procedures, basic indexing, query optimization, and validation/testing.ย ย
  • Experience contributing to aย web applicationย at one or more layers beyond the database, including meaningful backend development (language/framework may vary).ย ย
  • Workingย proficiencyย inย VB.NET or C#.NETย (or a close equivalent with the ability to ramp quickly).ย ย
  • Front-end fundamentals:ย HTML, CSS (Bootstrap), JavaScript.ย ย
  • Practical experience working inย Agileย (Scrum, Kanban, orย SAFe).ย ย
  • Able to work withย limited direction, turn ambiguity into action, and communicate tradeoffs clearly.ย
  • Strong problem-solving skills-debugging, root cause analysis, and performance troubleshooting mindset.ย ย
  • Solid grasp of intermediate engineering concepts such asย modular design, state management, asynchronous patterns, and managing dependencies.ย ย
  • Can analyze requirements and proposeย sound technical approachesย before writing code.ย ย
  • Comfortable contributing in an environment where priorities can shiftย quicklyย and outcomes matter more than ceremony.
What Success Looks Like (within your first year)
  • Delivered multiple meaningful featuresย end-to-end (database backend UI) with minimal rework and strong quality.ย ย
  • Demonstratedย SQL performance competence -ย you canย identifyย inefficient queries, tune stored procedures, and apply indexing basics appropriately.ย ย
  • Become a trusted contributor in the backend codebase, able to implementย complex business logicย and troubleshoot defects across layers.ย ย
  • Improved team throughput through strongย Agile participationย (refinement, estimation, planning) and proactive risk/blocker identification.ย ย
  • Positively influenced code quality throughย thoughtful reviews, adherence to patterns/standards, and pragmatic engineering decisions.ย ย
  • Supportedย growthย of junior teammates throughย mentoring and guidance.ย
What Makes This Role Exciting
  • High ownership, real impact:ย You'llย work on core systems where your improvements show up quickly in performance, reliability, and customer experience.ย
  • Builder-friendly environment:ย Ifย you'reย the kind of developer who likes rolling up your sleeves, untangling complexity, and shipping practical solutions,ย you'llย have plenty of room to do that here.ย
  • Broader scope than a typical mid-level role:ย You'llย touch SQL and application layers - not just one narrow slice - building strong "how the whole thing works" instincts.ย ย
  • Opportunity to level up fast:ย You'llย be surrounded by real-world problems (performance, maintainability, evolving requirements) that accelerate learning and technical maturity.ย
  • Autonomy with clear expectations:ย We'reย hiring for someone who can contributeย inย more than one area of the system and take ownership of meaningful work, who want a strong step-up in ownership and responsibility, without being expected toย operateย as a fully senior "architect/lead everything" profile.ย
At Agate Software you'll be part of a team that is dedicated to making a difference through cutting-edge technology and unwavering dedication to our impactful work. Ifย you'reย ready to make a significant contribution to communities in need and grow your career in an inspiring and challenging environment, apply today!
