What is a Google software developer?

Google Software Developers are engineers who design, build, test, and maintain software products and systems used by millions of people around the world. They work on a wide range of projects, from developing new features for Google Search and Gmail to building infrastructure for cloud computing and artificial intelligence. These developers collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex problems, improve user experiences, and ensure the scalability and reliability of Google’s products. To succeed in this role, strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a passion for innovation are essential.

How does a Google software developer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Google Software Developers frequently work alongside product managers, UX designers, and quality assurance engineers to deliver robust products. Collaboration is often structured through agile methodologies, with regular stand-up meetings, code reviews, and design discussions. Communication tools like Google Meet and internal documentation systems are heavily utilized to keep everyone aligned. This cross-functional environment not only encourages knowledge sharing but also provides developers with broader exposure to different aspects of product development, fostering both technical and interpersonal growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Google software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Google Software Developer, you need strong computer science fundamentals, excellent coding skills (especially in languages like Python, Java, or C++), and typically a bachelor's or higher degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with distributed systems, cloud technologies, version control (such as Git), and familiarity with Google's internal tools or similar industry-standard platforms are highly valued. Problem-solving ability, collaboration, and effective communication are critical soft skills to excel in team-oriented, fast-paced projects. These skills and qualities are essential for creating scalable, high-impact products that meet Google's rigorous technical and innovation standards.

Job description

Who you are:

We are always looking for amazing talent who can contribute to our growth and deliver results! Geotab is seeking a Software Developer who will be part of a team that builds a state-of-the-art telematics platform that makes sense of the data collected by our custom-built hardware. This position will involve writing high-performance C# code and SQL queries to process and store this information in real-time, as well as JavaScript and TypeScript code to create fast and responsive user interfaces. If you love technology, and are keen to join an industry leader - we would love to hear from you!

What you'll do:

As a Software Developer your key area of responsibility will be defining, designing, and implementing new software applications, translating application storyboards and use cases into functional applications, and performing Test-Driven and Security-Driven Development. You will conduct comprehensive code reviews, analyze call stacks, trace files, debug logs, and performance data to troubleshoot and identify the root cause of bugs, and participate in the development of prototypes, minimum viable products, and proofs of concept. You will need to work closely with other members of the development and technical teams to consider functionality, performance, scalability, reliability, and system architecture for each assignment.

To be successful in this role you will be a self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills, and have the ability to quickly understand complex, technical concepts. In addition, the successful candidate will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, work well under pressure, and respond to fast-changing priorities and deadlines.

How you'll make an impact:
  • Define, design, and implement new software applications in collaboration with other members of the development and technical teams, based on industry standards and best practices.
  • Translate application storyboards and use cases into functional applications.
  • Perform Test-Driven and Security-Driven Development.
  • Conduct comprehensive code reviews and ensure that coding standards are followed.
  • Analyze call stacks, trace files, debug logs, or performance data to troubleshoot and identify the root cause of bugs.
  • Participate in development of prototypes, minimum viable products, and PoCs.
  • Provide design documents and documentation to ensure efficient maintenance and code reuse.
What you'll bring to the role:
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Computer Science, Electrical, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1-5 years of previous experience in a related field.
  • Experience using Linux, C#, and .Net, with object-oriented design, unit testing, optimization, and multithreaded programming.
  • Experience programming with JavaScript, CSS, and HTML, and exposure to Python, TypeScript, ES6, .Net Core, Google Compute Engine, and Google BigQuery.
  • Working knowledge of cloud computing with GCP, AWS, and/or Azure.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • A strong team player with an entrepreneurial mindset, comfortable engaging with all levels of the organization in a flat organizational structure.

If you got this far, we hope you're feeling excited about this role! Even if you don't feel you meet every single requirement, we still encourage you to apply.
