About this role

We are looking for a Senior Software Developer (Backend) to join our Scheduling Hybrid Network team. If you are passionate about building scalable, resilient distributed systems and thrive in a fast paced, high scale environment, this role is for you.

As a Senior Backend Developer within our Logistics domain, you will play a key role in designing and operating the services that power our courier network. You will own backend systems end-to-end, from data modelling to event flows, deployment, and production operations, and contribute to the architecture of an event driven platform.

Your mission is to deliver robust, performant, and observable backend services, working closely with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to ship features that couriers and the wider logistics platform rely on every day. You will champion modern backend practices, mentor peers, and help shape the future of backend engineering within the organization.

In short, you'll combine deep backend expertise with a strong engineering mindset to deliver world class distributed services at scale.

Location: Remote - Ontario

Reporting to: Technology Manager

These are some of the key components to the position:
  • Architect and Build scalable, high-performance backend services utilizing Java (Quarkus/Spring Boot) and Node.js architectures.
  • Model and Evolve complex distributed domains using Domain Driven Design (DDD), bounded contexts, and event-driven patterns.
  • Design and Implement robust asynchronous workflows and decoupled communications leveraging Kafka, AWS SQS, and AWS SNS.
  • Own End-to-End Reliability by defining SLIs/SLOs, instrumenting observability via Datadog, and leading production incident response and log analysis.
  • Optimize Data Architecture across relational (Aurora RDS), analytical (Google BigQuery), and caching layers (Redis).
  • Deploy and Operate cloud-native services on AWS/Azure utilizing Kubernetes (EKS) and driving CI/CD and progressive rollouts.
  • Collaborate and Mentor across cross-functional Agile teams (Product, Mobile, QE, Data) to champion engineering excellence and continuous delivery.
What will you bring to the team?
  • Proven Scale Experience: 5+ years of experience building, operating, and tuning production-grade backend services at scale within Agile environments.
  • Advanced JVM & Node Proficiency: Strong, production-proven mastery of Java (Quarkus/Spring Boot); additional backend proficiency in Node.js is highly valued.
  • Distributed Systems Expertise: Deep understanding of pub/sub patterns, idempotency, eventual consistency, and sagas using Kafka, SQS, and SNS.
  • Polyglot Database Mastery: Strong hands-on experience with schema design, query tuning, and migrations across Relational (PostgreSQL/MySQL), NoSQL, and Redis caching.
  • Cloud & Orchestration: Solid production experience deploying to AWS and/or Azure with containerized workloads running on Kubernetes (EKS).
  • Modern DevOps & Testing: Strong knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CloudFormation), GitOps, and rigorous automated testing (K6/Gatling/JMeter).
  • API & Observability Standards: Solid grounding in RESTful API design (with gRPC/GraphQL/AsyncAPI exposure) and comprehensive APM/distributed tracing using Datadog.

AI & Modern Engineering Capabilities

  • AI-Assisted Development: Hands-on experience maximizing productivity using cutting-edge tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Claude Code for software delivery.
  • Agent-Ready Repository Management: Experience structuring codebases for AI contribution by maintaining optimized READMEs, AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md files, and reproducible local setups.
  • Autonomous Engineering Workflows: Proven experience leveraging AI agents to drive end-to-end tasks, including code generation, complex refactoring, debugging, and automated PR workflows.
